Carlton Hotel Prestwick

The Carlton Hotel sits right in the heart of Prestwick, a town that's properly stitched into Open Championship history. The very first Open was played at Prestwick Golf Club back in 1860, and you're staying just down the road from it. You've also got Prestwick St Nicholas close by, so there's no shortage of old-school links atmosphere before you've even left town.

From a touring point of view, the location is the big win. You're well placed for three Open venues in Ayrshire: Prestwick, Royal Troon and Trump Turnberry, with plenty of other standout tracks within easy reach too. Ayrshire is stacked for choice (44 courses in the wider area), so you can build a trip around bucket-list links like Western Gailes, Gailes Links and Kilmarnock (Barassie), then mix in a modern championship test at Dundonald Links. Troon Portland, Irvine and plenty more are also on the menu, which is ideal if your group likes variety without the faff of changing hotels every night.

Prestwick itself is lively, walkable and full of good options for a pint and a feed after your round. If you want a town-centre base with proper golf pedigree rather than a sealed-off resort, this one fits the brief.

Who is this for?
Golfers touring Ayrshire who want a central, no-fuss base near championship links plus pubs, restaurants and the town centre.

Who is it best for?
Groups and societies looking to play a variety of links courses without moving hotels and golfers building a trip around Prestwick, Troon and Turnberry with the option to add more Ayrshire rounds.

Accommodation at Carlton Hotel Prestwick

Situated a short drive from some of the finest courses along the Ayrshire coast, The Carlton Hotel is a practical, comfortable base for a golf trip in and around Prestwick. It's not trying to be a five-star resort and that's the point. You're here to play great links, eat well and get a good night's sleep before the next tee time.

The hotel has 39 guestrooms with a modern, streamlined look. Expect the essentials golfers actually use: a comfortable bed, a hot shower, reliable free Wi-Fi and a TV. It's the sort of set-up that works well for groups who are out early, back late and don't want to pay for facilities they'll never touch. Rooms are clean, well maintained and designed with function in mind rather than unnecessary extras.

Downstairs, Logan's bar and restaurant is handy for a post-round drink and an easy dinner without having to head back out. It also caters for private functions, which can be useful for society trips or bigger groups wanting to keep everyone together. The Sunday Carvery has a strong local reputation and it's a cracking shout after a cold, windy day on the links. If you fancy something different, you can walk to a range of pubs and restaurants in just a few minutes and soak up the local golf-town atmosphere.

One of the best bits is that you're in the middle of Prestwick, not tucked away. You're close to the train station and well placed for getting around the rest of Ayrshire, which makes it easy to rotate courses day to day while keeping the same base. There's plenty of choice for food and drink within comfortable walking distance, so you're not stuck eating in the same place every night. The hotel gives you the flexibility to plan your evenings as you go, whether that's a quiet pint in Logan's or a proper night out in town.

For groups, the combination of central location, straightforward rooms and on-site dining makes logistics simple. You can park up, drop your clubs and get on with the golf without worrying about transfers or complicated check-ins. It's a solid choice for golfers who want to be in the thick of things rather than isolated on a resort complex, with easy access to everything Prestwick and the wider Ayrshire coast has to offer.

Truly top notch, spotlessly clean, lovely decor. The breakfasts were to die for with some great healthy options. The staff were brilliant from reception team, kitchen, bar staff and cleaners. A special mention to the staff members who helped me when I had a medical episode. The hotel is a good 35 minute walk into town but great taxi services if you want them for town and the golf. Vic’s bar in Prestwick is very good :-)
