Located on spectacular cliffs overlooking the town, The Castle Course is the seventh layout under the St Andrews Links banner and it doesn't feel like the "usual" St Andrews experience, in the best possible way.
While the Old, New and Jubilee sit down on the flatter linksland, The Castle is up high on exposed, rolling ground. You get big, sweeping views across St Andrews Bay and the Eden Estuary, with the town and university spires behind you.
Designer David Maclay Kidd, the Scottish architect behind Machrihanish Dunes and Bandon Trails at Bandon Dunes Resort, has produced a modern, strategic test that leans into the site's elevation changes. Fairways drop away, climb back up ridges and run through natural gullies, so you're rarely playing the same shot twice. And yes, the wind is nearly always part of the conversation up here, often stronger and a bit more awkward than down on the Old Course, so bring your knock-down shots and expect plenty of "one more club... actually two" moments when it's blowing.
Opened in 2008, The Castle quickly earned a reputation as one of the sternest rounds in the Links stable. It won't flatter anything slightly offline, with a few forced carries, tight landing areas and greens that ask for proper control, but play it well and it's hugely satisfying.
Who is this for?
Anyone building a St Andrews itinerary who wants a modern clifftop round alongside the classics.
Who is it best for?
Confident ball-strikers and golfers who like strategy, wind and elevation, rather than a gentle seaside stroll.

The Castle Course is wedged between the town and the Fairmont St Andrews resort, on the stretch of land that is also home to the astonishing Kingsbarns, providing remarkable views of the ‘Auld Grey Toon’ and St Andrews Bay. More importantly, Kidd’s mammoth creation is a phenomenal tribute to links golf.
With five sets of tees, The Castle Course ranges from 5,300 to 7,200 yards, ensuring a stern but appropriate test for every visitor, and while it may need to mature, the layout looks set to become a classic addition to a golf tour of St Andrews. Into the rugged seaside grasses are carved some monumental holes, not least the 9th and 18th, whose greens share the land of the Kinkell Ness promontory.
The eagerly anticipated Castle Course merely strengthens the hand of St Andrews, adding another string to the already impressive bow of the world’s most famous golfing destination.

What a fabulous course! Every hole was beautiful and uniquely. The practice facilities were fabulous, all the staff in the clubhouse, bar, gift shop and pro shop were incredible. We had incredible weather and the caddies were great fun and helpful. A very tough test of golf with hard to hit fairways and punishing rough but the greens were stunning and diabolical in turn. Undulating and severe in slope they are tough. The most beautiful course I've ever had the chance to play.

On the three previous rounds we had played as a two ball and on this occasion we were paired with a visitor off a similar handicap and ability. Enjoyed the layout and the challenging greens with their substantial height variations. A most enjoyable round with pleasant company, played in just over 4 hours.

What a course. A better links would be hard to find. Greens are incredible. Good Will Hunting might struggle with the reads, but you’ll never forget playing here.

We played it in 50 mph gusts so would be unfair to give it a true opinion
