Since opening in 1993, Chart Hills Golf Club has built a reputation as a serious Kent test, the sort of course that rewards a plan and exposes a loose swing. Designed by Sir Nick Faldo as his first UK project, this Garden of England layout has since been renovated and it now plays like a modern championship challenge. With American designer Steve Smyers on board, Faldo shaped a bold course across the rural Kent countryside and it remains a highly sought after round in Kent for golfers who like their golf to ask questions.
From the opening tee shot, accuracy matters. Fairways sit at angles that make you pick a side and commit, while bunkers are never far away if you leak it right or left. The par-5 5th is the headline act, with the famous Anaconda bunker snaking along more than 200 yards of the hole and turning every decision into risk and reward. Then there's the par-3 17th, an island green that ramps up the pressure just when your card matters most.
Chart Hills is widely seen as a fair challenge for a range of handicaps. Play smart and it's hugely enjoyable, but when the wind gets up it can feel like one of the tougher tests in England.

In stark contrast to the surroundings, Faldo's creation is decidedly man-made, featuring in particular a succession of the largest and most fearsome bunkers in England. An ‘anaconda' bunker snakes its way along the most dramatic par-5, while the island green at the short penultimate hole is enough to strike fear into the heart of the most confident player.
Smyers' influence is also readily evident; Chart Hills is essentially set up as a country club, drawing inspiration from the American model. As such, everything is laid on from the first moment to last, underlining that Chart Hills offers one of the most comprehensive luxury golf experiences in the country.
Chart Hills Golf Club is ranked as one of the best courses in London and the South East

A tough test with many bunkers and water hazards. Excellent practice facilities and clubhouse. Some confusion on our package with YourGolfTravel. Documentation provided showed breakfast was included. Chart Hills said it was not, as we had not paid for it. Your golf Travel were not able to resolve the issue when we arrived, and their representative was unable to trace the document they sent which stated breakfast was included, so we had to pay for something we were told by YGT, was included. I don’t believe this was any fault of Chart Hills. Yet was not an ideal start to our trip.

Slightly scruffy in places but great layout

The course was almost empty so we were quick but with its combination of numerous challenging bunkers and water it was the hardest of our three courses (North Foreland, Princes).
