Coxmoor Golf Club sits on one of the highest points in Nottinghamshire, right alongside Forestry Commission land near Sutton in Ashfield. It's a genuine countryside course, with big views and an exposed feel that can bring the wind into play more often than you'd expect inland.
Established in 1913, Coxmoor has serious credentials, having hosted regional Open Championship Qualifying, the British Seniors Amateur Open Championship and British Boys Championships. In other words, it's more than a pleasant knock, it's a track that stands up when good players turn up.
For visitors, the challenge is simple and satisfying. Find fairways, pick smart targets and let the course come to you. The layout rewards accuracy and tidy course management, with greens that ask for commitment on approach shots and a confident read once you're on them. Ken Brown's involvement in shaping ongoing tweaks should keep the test sharp while protecting the club's traditional character.
A mix of open, elevated holes and more sheltered stretches gives the round real variety, and the routing makes great use of the natural contours. If it's blowing, take one more club and keep it under the wind on the exposed holes. It's a great shout for a relaxed society day because it's testing without feeling unfair.
Who is this for?
Golfers planning a Nottinghamshire break who want a quality, well-kept course with genuine pedigree and sweeping views, ideal for small groups and societies looking for a straightforward, enjoyable day.
Who is it best for?
Confident ball-strikers and anyone who likes plotting their way round, especially when the breeze gets up. A smart pick if you've played the headline venues and want something with character and a championship edge.

Coxmoor is a heathland course, like many others in the area, playing around 6,800 from the back tees, it's tight layout makes the course a great test for all golfers. The original 9 hole layout was extended in the 1930's by Tom Williamson, the professional from Notts Golf Club and the Coxmoor professional Len White.
The new layout contains of a number of long par 4 holes that can be a nightmare to reach in regulation when the wind is up meaning your short game needs to be up to scratch to make par. Narrow fairways wind through the heather and trees with thick rough awaiting any wayward shots.
At nearly 600 feet above sea level the course is one of the highest points in Nottinghamshire and is often exposed to cold hard winds that can challenge any golfers ability. The hospitality in the clubhouse is second to none, offering a warm welcome and a great range of food and drink, the perfect place to relax after your round.
Coxmoor Golf Club is very popular with societies and groups who wish to play the fantastic courses of the County of Nottinghamshire. Pair this course up with the like of Notts Golf Club and Sherwood Forest Golf Club for a great golf tour in the East Midlands.
