Dunbar Golf Club is a classic East Lothian links on the estuary of the Firth of Forth, around 30 miles east of Edinburgh. Established in 1856, it has been shaped over the years by Old Tom Morris, Ben Sayers and James Braid, which tells you plenty about the pedigree. It also hosted the first PGA Championship on the European Tour in 1968 and has been used as an Open Qualifying venue when The Open was at Muirfield.
Set on the south-east edge of Scotland's Golf Coast, Dunbar delivers exactly what you come to East Lothian for: firm, fast fairways, tight lies and plenty of wind to keep you honest. The bunkering is well placed rather than flashy and the greens put a real premium on leaving yourself the right angle in. In other words, it's proper links golf and it rewards thinking your way round rather than just hitting it hard.
Right, logistics. Base yourself in North Berwick, Gullane or Edinburgh and you can slot Dunbar into a multi-course trip without hassle. It tends to be quieter than the headline names nearby, but don't mistake that for an easier day out. The routing uses the natural contours of the land, with holes that run along the shoreline and others that turn inland, giving you variety in both direction and challenge. It's playable year-round and if you're planning an East Lothian run, it's well worth including Dunbar on your next Scotland golf break.
Who is this for?
Golfers who want to explore East Lothian beyond the headline courses, plus groups building a multi-course Scotland's Golf Coast itinerary from Edinburgh, Gullane or North Berwick.
Who is it best for?
Mid to low handicappers and links lovers who enjoy a strategic test with tournament pedigree, without paying top-end marquee prices.

The course opens gently with a couple of holes slightly inland before the true character of Dunbar is revealed with some majestic holes along the coastline. The well defined fairways track the natural contours of the narrow strip of land between the rocky coastline and the old red sandstone deer park wall, creating a classic links feel.
Play Dunbar 12 months a year and you will see the great job the green staff do, the course is always immaculate. Visiting golfers will experience the sound of the North Sea lapping on the shore, ensure they steer clear of the out of bounds along the old stonewall and fight a continuous battle with the sea breeze.
With little to protect golfers from the elements, the links at Dunbar is one of the best courses in the East Lothian area and is an exceedingly challenging proposition as part of an East Lothian golf tour.
Dunbar Golf Club is situated 1 mile east of the village of Dunbar in East Lothian off the A1087.

Fantastic setting, very good condition, without wind a slightly easier links challenge with less gorse etc than others. New clubhouse being built, should be an excellent addition for the club

Facilities are under construction so no practice facilities at all, which is entirely understandable while the works are ongoing..

Our group loved playing Dunbar. The quirkiness, the routing, the challenge, the condition and the welcome were all that you could hope for. From the anticipation of “going through the wall”, to the shot from the 4th tee, all the way out and then back in, it was such a memorable golfing experience. A must play if you’re in the region.

The course was nice to play, the green weren't that fast, might be cause of the heavy rains and the difficulties to cut the greens but overall everything was good. Chipping green for the warming up is poor.

Great test of golf with some stunning views, and a course in great condition. Clubhouse of its time and limited practice facilities but the practice putting green was very good.

The course is a real hidden gem, fantastic layout with superb tees, fairways and greens. We played on a very windy day and found playing into the wind on the back 9 very tough. I would highly recommend Dunbar to anyone wanting to experience links golf
