The Old Course

Measuring over 7,000 from the championship markers, Formby Hall is a considerable test, and is regarded as a welcome addition to the seemingly endless list of excellent courses in the North-West.

Formby Hall has staged PGA Challenge Tour events, and it's now a regular stop on the PGA Europro Tour. The flood lit driving range has recently been re-furbished with now state of the art toptracer equipment in each of the 20 bays.

Formby Hall prides itself in its superb putting surfaces, and the parkland resort style provides good variety alongside the numerous links courses dotted along the coastline. The 18 hole golf course sits in a tranquil setting with wooded areas and water features providing definition and character.

Signature Hole:  Hole 16, Par 3, 187 yards, SI 15

The 16th at Formby is a beautiful Par 3 played over a lake to a well-protected green. With bunkers short left, short right and long there is little alternative but to hit the green.

I booked through ygt for a golf night away for my boyfriend’s birthday. The hotel was stunning, I booked a double room and got upgraded to a Superior Fairway room which had a view of the 18th hole which was amazing. The food at dinner and breakfast was nice. The staff were friendly but service could have been a bit quicker on the evening of our dinner. The spa was basic but was nice and clean and did it’s job for the time we spent there. Overall, our experience at this hotel was great and we would return.

The staff are brilliant and extremely pleasant and helpful. Disappointed that as it was our first time here on a golf break and it wasn’t busy, we were put in a disabled room overlooking the car park, not the course, which would have changed the feel completely. Food is very good although half board is actually a £25 contribution to your evening meal and not actually half board. Leisure facilities are good too and treatment rooms very nice. Overall a good stay.

Formby hall was a lovely hotel and the course was in great condition only issue our group had was at the restaurant for dinner and breakfast time we were told 1 thing by reception that we could have anything of the restaurant menu to then be told we had to order from a separate set menu we sat down for dinner at 20.00 and didn’t get our food till 21.00 then was told it was a buffet style breakfast all you can eat only to arrive for breakfast to be told it’s table service which needs to be ordered this was sorted out and a buffet breakfast was eventually served all the staff we encountered we really nice and couldn’t fault handling our concerns I found there was little to no communication between members of staff. The hotel and restaurant was excellent. The rooms were superb and we'll equipped to a very high standard. Excellent choice for breakfast also. Bar service really good to.

The reception staff were very helpful as it was my friends birthday we were given an upgrade room which made the experience even nicer. The food was lovely, we had lunch on arrival, evening meal then breakfast, all meals were cooked fresh and very delicious. We played two rounds of golf, the course is challenging but in really lovely condition. I would recommend anybody to go and experience a lovely time like we had. I definitely will go back in the near future. Thank you Formby hall. Marie👍

Rooms were comfortable standard. Dining experience was not good. Having reserved dinner for 7.30 we went to the dining room and were told that the Lady Captain of the Club had taken our slot and we would be called at 8.30. 30 minutes later we were called but some of our party had been advised of the 8.30 time earlier in the day and were not ready so we had to start without them. After the meal in the bar area a waiter spilled drinks and broke some glasses where we were sitting, the drinks going over one of our members and some shards of glass hitting some members. The way in which they set about clearing the spillage and breakage was most unprofessional - mopping around us instead of clearing the area whilst they did it! Breakfast the following morning was poorly arranged to cope with the numbers in the hotel. There were several issues regarding supply of food and quality/cooking which were unacceptable.

Formby Hall was excellent and thoroughly enjoyed by all.

We couldn't fault the hotel which, although very busy, was very efficiently run and the members of staff could not have been more helpful. We had upgraded rooms overlooking course which were spacious and very comfortable.

The food was excellent too and obviously freshly cooked, with a good choice on the menu and plentiful portions.

We all found the golf course to be pretty challenging, even for some of the lower handicappers. This did not spoil our enjoyment though, despite loss of quite a few golf balls in the many water hazards!

Altogether Formby Hall offers a very good experience.

My first comment after I had finished my call with you was to my wife. I said that was probably the easiest hotel and golf booking I have ever made, yourgolftravel’s service was exceptional.

Everything about the trip was first class. We have never been to a hotel where everybody was so genuinely friendly. The hotel and its facilities, as well as the food, the golf course and everything we experienced was simply superb.

We have already recommended Formby Hall to all our friends and would score everything as 10 out of 10.

We are off to Celtic Manor next week and I only hope it’s as good as Formby Hall.

I would love to give you my feedback on our golf break to Formby Hall as it was an absolute blast!

After sorting all payments and bookings out with YGT months prior it was a case of just turning up and enjoying because there was nothing else we had to do apart from play golf, get key to room and eat...as simple as that!

We played the par 3 course followed by the 18 hole championship course on both days and it worked perfectly for us (six of us), as the par 3 course was a fantastic little warm up before the main event. The championship course was in fantastic condition and really challenging.

After the golf each day we all had a relaxing swim and sauna in the spa which was beautifully clean and so relaxing followed by a quick trip back to the rooms which were also beautiful, clean and up to date.

After a quick change we were down to the restaurants for yet again beautiful delicious food. Then after the meal back to the bar for a well deserved couple of pints of ICE cold beer. Then the breakfast in the morning was also lovely, and you can help yourself to whatever you want – full english, yoghurt, fruit, pastries, etc, etc – and as much as you want! We even made a sausage toastie to take out for the golf!

All in all we had 4 games of golf, a three course evening meal, an “eat as much as you want” breakfast, swim, sauna and an overnight stay in lovely accommodation and much, much more for an incredible £130!

So YGT...you get a HUGE thumbs up from me and my mates, as does Formby Hall.

On behalf of Silverdale Golf Club ladies I would like to thank you for booking our annual trip with such efficiency and patience as usual.

Formby Hall provided us with the best golf holiday we’ve been on so far.

The weather was superb and the golf course was in good condition for this time of year. We enjoyed watching the herons, hearing the woodpeckers and the swans that were nesting just before the 18th green. We got some great photos!

The hotel had very clean and well kept rooms, and the surrounding areas, as well as the food, were excellent, both in the dining room and the 19th hole. It was just so comfortable. The flower arrangements finished off the public areas perfectly. Prices in the bar were reasonable with a good choice of drinks.

We all agreed that Formby Hall is blessed with excellent staff throughout who were happy to please us in every way; great value for money! This venue gets a ten out of ten from us and we hope to return next year.

We thoroughly enjoyed our short golf break at Formby Hall Golf and Spa Resort. It's located just a few miles from the coastal town of Southport, which is styled as the capital of England's Golf Coast.

The hotel is quite modern in design and is exceptionally comfortable with a wide range of facilities including spa treatment, golf academy, pro shop and restaurant. The rooms are modern in design and well furnished. We upgraded to a deluxe room which gave a wonderful sunlit view of the 18th green and approaching golfers.

The clubhouse, which forms part of the hotel complex, is modern and spacious, serving a range of food and drink, with picture windows and a spacious patio overlooking the 9th and 18th greens. All the staff were very friendly and helpful.

The golf course itself is a parkland layout, which is quite flat with no severe slopes or gradients, making for an easy walk in pleasant surroundings. This makes it very suitable for golfers of all age ranges. The course is quite long and relies heavily on water for its defence. In fact, water features on some 14 of the 18 holes so it's probably wise to bring a good supply of balls! The greens are well kept and have interesting undulations to keep you on your toes when putting, but not so severe as to be beyond the average player.

The course is very popular and well used and was showing signs of winter repair work. Our visit was in early April, so I fully expect a few weeks growth will make these areas indistinguishable from the rest of the course which is perfectly well kept.

You should be aware that as the hotel and course are conveniently located they are very popular, especially with golf societies which, unfortunately, can have an effect on the pace of play; something to bear in mind when choosing when to play this delightful venue.

I was very impressed with the team at Your Golf Travel who were professional, friendly and courteous. A couple of emails and phone calls and all the arrangements were made and everything on the golf break itself went smoothly. I shall certainly use you guys again.

Overall I'd highly recommend Formby Hall and Your Golf Travel to anyone who is looking for a good-value short golf-break in the North-West of England.

Going out of season meant the course was under maintenance, the greens had just been sanded so not the best to play on but needs to be done. The weather has been terrible and the course held up well to it. A challenging course made difficult by gale force winds! Would love to play on a sunny afternoon! Quick round but course was quiet due to such bad weather.

The course is a great set up and the green staff do a fabulous job presenting it well. It’s a pretty long walk around for those not used to walking although it’s very flat. Buggies are available. The holes are fair and club selection on some with mid fairway hazards is really important to ensure you don’t play yourself into trouble. The Goliath hole par 5 on the back 9 is a monster. Overall a really well presented, interesting and set up course with a halfway house at the hotel at hole 9. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Good course for the average golfer which was what our party was made up of . Lots of water so you have to think your way around . Greens were in good condition . The only little problem was the back nine on Monday took 3 hours to complete because of a very slow 4 ball who started about 40 minutes in front of us !

Very Good

It is a easy course to walk and plenty of water to lose your balls. The course layout is good but it lacks refinement, quality or Finishing touches. We had a problem with the tee times as in they did not book enough for my party.they were adamant it was our or YGT fault but ended up being theirs. The golf staff were unhelpful and rude. But no apology just silence. I will not rebook to return there and there are better venues to go to.

All the group really enjoyed the trip and we have said we would definitely go back (we would take alot more balls though) 2nd day was really slow and we was waiting at tees the majority of the round... The pace of play was just awful. Both days were 5hrs 15 minutes. When speaking with the head pro, apparently “this is normal for a weekend”. I wasn’t aware any club in the world was promoting 5 plus hour rounds these days!! It really tarnished the experience. Literally waiting to take your shot on each hole for each shot. Awful.

Course was not in great condition and the pace of play was very slow, so much so we decided to call it a day after 9 holes

Over rated and not in very good condition. The waste areas between green and tee looked like rubbish dumps.

Nice Course played well considering weather but we can’t change that would definitely go back in the summer months to play again

Very busy. Difficult to find balls with all the fallen leaves. Had to let a few people through.

When we booked we asked for courses local to Herons Reach and this course is an hours drive away, not what I would class as local.

The course requires a marshal to keep play going and to ensure correct golf etiquette is adhered to.

The course is a very good test but possibly weather related the rough was long. Long enough to lose balls just off the fairway. The group overall were complimentary of the course.

A great test. Greens were fabulous, fairways scorched and in need of rain to give them back some moisture but they’re well kept considering the use they get. Lots of water and it doesn’t get any easier on your 2nd round. 👍👍

The course has plenty of water and so you must think about every tee shot. We were a group of 12 6 low handicaps 6 above 18. Day one we played match play in room pairs and Day 2 as drawn teams low / high handicap combined stableford competition which was a good format. The greens were not that quick as our last visit however this was welcome as the course is a good test and rewards good shots. The pace of play was good on both days.

A great course with some challenging holes, lots of water hazards to get the nerves jangling. Birdie on 16 was highlight for me.

Course condition was relatively poor except for the greens. Large areas of burnt fairways with poor lies. Not a good course to suit the average golfer with far too many penalty areas resulting in lost balls in numerous water hazards

The course was first rate superb fast greens manicured fairways, and good bunkers. There was water on must holes so Course management needs to be spot on to score well the course is hard especially in the wind but fair

Good track. Unfortunately one of our members lost a putter between 9th green and 10th tee - a fairly long walk - and it was disappointing that it was not handed in, although this is no fault of the hotel.

The weather conditions (wind) made it difficulty. We were playing this course first before the back 9 on the Old Course because the Club were holding a competition and the a Captain's Drive in during the morning. They had obviously not factored in sufficient time for us to play the 9 holes so consequently there were issues when we arrived at the 10th tee as there was another party scheduled to go out.

Golf course very nice, disappointing on the weekend we played with the tee boxes looking very tired and the greens having work done. The lay out of the course is fantastic and sure on another weekend would have been a great course.
