Formby Golf Club is home to a superb course that is frequently selected to host top amateur tournaments, the most recent being the 2009 Amateur Championship. Formby Golf Club

Recent developments have seen the maximum length extended to over 7,000 yards, and with the constant threat of the indigenous heather, there is no doubting Formby's formidable challenge. The original 1884 design has seen alterations from revered names like Willie Park, James Braid, Hawtree, Steel and Pennick, some of the most prominent individuals in the history of British golf architecture, and with this pedigree it is easy to understand why Formby is held in such high regard.

When the wind blows hard, the firm and fast greens are difficult to find, and the lengthy par-3s are some of the most challenging in the local area. The superb history of the club itself, and the exceptionally mature golf course make it one of the premier stops on the Southport tour.

Visitors to Formby will be following in some famous footsteps; among the list of past champions is Jose Maria Olazabal, who defeated his fellow Ryder Cup hero Colin Montgomerie in the final of the 1984 Amateur Championship.

Many thanks for organising a wonderful golf break at Formby Hall. I would highly recommend a golf break here. The hotel was very good, the rooms were modern and well appointed, and there was a good range of facilities.

Breakfast and our evening meal were both very good. The inclusion of the 3 course dinner in the package meant it really was excellent value. There is a good spa here and there is also a practice range available for use.

The golf course was in excellent condition, the greens in particular were superb. The course has an interesting mix of modern style with quite a few water features but the bunkers are links style pot bunkers. There was a half price deal on buggies which was worth doing because although the course is quite flat, it is still a relatively long walk.

The location is good, it’s close enough to motorway network, but still in a nice peaceful location.

All in we had an excellent break with unbeatable value on our package.

We had been here before and as previously Formby Hall and all of the staff did themselves proud! They made our stay as good as it could have been. The weather was fantastic, we managed both days on the patio overlooking the 18th as everyone came in, there aren’t many better settings!

The course was great and we ran a sweep as to how many balls would be lost, the first day 48 of us lost 167 balls, and on the second day 164 balls! I was the only one not to loose a ball on either day, amazing!

The food was great, and there were a lot of attentive staff, always a good sign. We breakfasted in both in the 19th hole, and the restaurant, both were excellent and very reasonably priced. Bar prices were good and after speaking to the Manager we managed to secure a 20% discount on all drinks and bar snacks while we were there. This brought a pint of lager down to less than £3, much to everyone’s delight. This benefited Formby because it meant all 48 of us stayed in the hotel all night rather than looking for other local pubs.

The rooms were great, we had 5 executive rooms for our dignitaries at no
extra cost, although a few ended up in the disabled shower rooms which they felt could do with updating.

The buggies are expensive at £30 each, and we were limited to booking just 15 of them which was a bit of a downer.

The only real downside for me was when I was asked if we would put 3 people in each of 2 rooms as they were overbooked and a room short, we were offered a "bucket of beers" in exchange. I refused this and I do admit to feeling disappointed at even being asked the question.

All in all though it was a great and memorable trip, we enjoyed it so much so that we are booking up again for next year.
