Designed by Open winner Willie Park Jnr in 1912, Gailes Links is classic Ayrshire links golf, with rumpled fairways, clever bunkering and greens that ask proper questions, especially when the breeze gets up. It sits on a superb stretch of the Scottish West coast, so you get that full links feel: firm turf, shots running in low and plenty of decision-making from the tee.
The course also has genuine pedigree. The R&A used Gailes as Scotland's only Final Open Qualifying venue up to 2017, which tells you everything about the standard of test on offer. You can't simply stand up and hit driver without paying the price. You'll score better if you pick your lines, use the slopes and accept that the ground game is your friend.
The greens are a highlight. They're well-shaped rather than tricked-up, with subtle movement that makes distance control and leaving the ball on the right side of the hole far more important than chasing flags. Miss in the wrong spot and you'll quickly find out why it worked so well as a pre-Open Championship examination.
If you're building a West coast run around Troon, Prestwick and Turnberry, Gailes is an excellent addition: authentic, challenging and very playable in the same round.
Include Gailes Links in your next Ayrshire golf break and we'll sort tee times and the right base for your group.
Who is this for? Golfers who want an authentic Scottish links round with Open-qualifying pedigree.
Who is it best for? Mid-to-low handicappers and golf groups touring Ayrshire and the West coast.

Park's architectural philosophy was very simple: he did not believe in greatly sloping greens or blind shots, but sought to create an exacting test by utilising the exisiting land. He allowed the natural heather and gorse to grow in and make the course a simple but very demanding proposition.
As a known favourite of Scottish great Sandy Lyle, and rated in Golf Monthly's Top 100, Gailes Links is traditional Ayrshire links golf at its best.

A very welcome welcome by the starter and in pro shop - a lovely gift of a Glasgow Golf Club scorecard holder was a very nice touch - greens were in excellent condition but not too quick (one cut and they'd be lightning fast!). Overall, the course was excellent, difficult but not too difficult, would highly recommend.

You walked into history as soon as you entered the magnificent clubhouse, very friendly staff. The course is a gem. A proper links test of golf. Unfortunately they greens had had winter maintenance on them so putting wasn’t easy with the greens having holes all over them. This did not stop the enjoyment and a great day.
