La Cañada might be a municipal course, but it's got serious design pedigree. The championship layout is split into two loops, one crafted by Robert Trent Jones and the other by Dave Thomas, so you get two distinct feels in one round.

Jones' holes ask you to think your way in, with smart bunkering and raised greens that put a premium on a tidy approach. The Thomas side tightens up in places, with more doglegs and a few proper risk-reward moments, particularly on the par 5s. You'll have chances to open the shoulders from the tee, but the scoring is won and lost around the greens where subtle breaks and firmer surfaces can catch you out if you cosy it up.

For a municipal track, La Cañada is usually presented in very good nick, with greens that roll true and plenty of run on the fairways when the summer heat kicks in. Being slightly inland from the Costa del Sol can mean calmer mornings than the exposed coastal layouts, though you'll still feel the breeze on the more open stretches later in the day.

If you're building a Málaga itinerary and want variety without resort-level green fees, this is a cracking shout, and a course you'll enjoy even more the second time round when you've learnt where not to miss.

Who is this for?
Golfers building a multi-course Málaga break who want a well-designed round and proper variety without resort pricing.

Who is it best for?
Mid-handicappers and better who enjoy strategic golf, and anyone who loves seeing two architect styles on the same scorecard.

La Canada Golf Club

The two distinct nines offer a considerable challenge, but La Caňada is not so difficult that the spectacular views of the Mediterranean coast will be spoiled. Undulating fairways and fast, sloping greens are characteristic of the course which is bordered by banks of amazing indigenous trees.

Being designed for the passionate local golfers, La Caňada is a genuine test of golf with a no-frills attitude, but the pure test of golf attracts visitors back again and again.

MUCH EASIER COURES 17TH HOLE CLOSED!

There were no locker rooms, no buggy bar and no half way house. We were paired up with a 4th player. The condition of the course was poor with very slow play particlarly at the end where there are two very difficult holes across thick vegetation and a ravine. Not recommended.

This is a very basic public course and it showed. Buggy’s were in poor condition the course looked tatty and it was packed with players. Very much felt like we had turned up at a local member’s club and just got fit in between for some green fees. I wouldn’t say don’t play it I would say it’s the course you play after a heavy night before as you won’t be to concerned if you missed it.

A nice course, good range but a dated clubhouse

Few greens and tee areas need attention, people need to repair divots and rake bunkers
