Malmaison Dundee

Set right on the waterfront in Dundee, Malmaison Dundee is a smart city-centre base with views across the River Tay and an easy walk to the best of the regenerated dockside. Discovery Point is just along the way, with the RSS Discovery permanently berthed, and you're also within around 15 minutes on foot of the McManus Galleries. The V&A Dundee is close by too if you fancy a culture fix between rounds.

If you like your breaks with a bit of buzz, Perth Road's cafés, pubs and independent spots are roughly 10 minutes' walk, so you can head out without needing taxis. Arriving by train is painless as well, with Dundee station only a few minutes away on foot.

Golf-wise, it's a very handy launchpad for the Angus coast. Carnoustie is an easy 20-minute drive and Panmure is even closer at around 15 minutes, with plenty more quality links and parkland options nearby if your group wants variety across the trip. In short, it's a great shout for golfers who want proper courses by day and a lively city backdrop once the last putt drops.

Who is this for?
Golf groups and couples who want a stylish, central Dundee base with easy access to Carnoustie and the wider Angus coast, plus restaurants and bars within walking distance.

Who is it best for?
Societies and groups planning a multi-course run in Angus who prefer a lively city stay over a quiet resort.

Accommodation at Malmaison Dundee

Housed in a converted Victorian building, Malmaison Dundee keeps plenty of its original character while leaning into the brand's boutique styling. There are 91 rooms across six floors, all finished with bold colours, modern furnishings and the sort of comfort you want after 36 holes in a day. Standard features include flat-screen TVs, en-suite bathrooms, tea and coffee facilities and complimentary WiFi. Many rooms look out towards the Tay or across the city, depending on where you're positioned in the building.

If you're here for a quick overnight before an early tee time, the standard doubles do the job nicely and usually have enough space to stash golf gear without the room feeling cramped. Staying a bit longer, or travelling as a couple who wants more breathing room? The larger rooms and suites add extra seating space and, in some cases, a more indulgent bathroom setup. There's lift access to all floors, which is handy when you're moving clubs and luggage.

Food and drink is one of the big plus points. The brasserie and Jasper Grill run from breakfast through to dinner, with a menu that mixes Scottish produce with familiar crowd-pleasers. Breakfast is a generous spread, with both cooked-to-order hot dishes and a continental selection, ideal for fuelling up before an early tee time at Carnoustie or Panmure. The steaks are a strong suit here, cooked over the grill and served with classic sides, while the fish options lean on locally landed catches from the nearby coast. It's a strong option for groups who want an easy meal on-site rather than organising taxis, and it works just as well for a quieter dinner for two.

For a post-round pint or a nightcap, the Malbar is a comfortable place to settle in, with a good range of whiskies, beers and cocktails. It's a relaxed space with leather seating, low lighting and a drinks list that runs from local craft ales and an extensive whisky selection to a cocktail menu that changes seasonally. It's a popular spot with locals as well as hotel guests, so there's usually a good buzz in the evenings, particularly at weekends. If you're heading out afterwards, you're already in the right part of town for it.

One of the main reasons golfers pick Dundee as a base is how quickly you can get onto the Angus coast. Carnoustie is the headline act and needs no hard sell, but it's not the only quality option within a short drive. Panmure is close and a great pairing if your group wants another proper test without doubling your travel time, while Monifieth and Montrose offer more excellent links flavours nearby. All are within half an hour by car, which means you can build a trip around one bucket-list round, then pad it out with courses that keep everyone in the group happy.

The big win here is flexibility. You can structure your days around lower handicaps chasing a sterner test at Carnoustie or Panmure, then mix in more forgiving options for the rest of the group who want an enjoyable day out and a strong clubhouse finish. Back in Dundee, you've got a lively city centre for dinner and drinks, so the non-golf bits of the trip feel just as easy to plan as the golf itself.

Right, I'll admit that staying in the city rather than out on the coast gives you more options once you're done for the day. If your group likes a proper night out, you're within walking distance of Perth Road's pubs and restaurants, and you're not stuck waiting for taxis or relying on quiet hotel bars. The hotel can help with directions and recommendations if you want to explore, and there's parking available nearby if you're driving to courses each day.

If you want, we can help you stitch together the best course mix for your dates and tee time availability, and keep the logistics simple. Play Carnoustie, Panmure and the Angus coast on your next Golf Break.
