Home to the world's 5th oldest golf course, Montrose Golf Links is about as authentic as Scottish links golf gets. Founded in 1562 and set right on the Angus coast, it gives you 36 holes across the 1562 Course and the Broomfield Course, so it's an easy pick if you fancy a proper full day of seaside golf in the Angus region.
The 1562 Course is the one most golfers come for. The front nine hugs the coastline, so you'll feel the wind straight away and you'll need to keep the ball under it. Then you turn slightly inland on the back nine and the questions change, with tighter angles and more trouble waiting if you get greedy.
Two holes that tend to decide your score are the 16th and 17th. The 16th is a long par 3 where anything a touch short or leaked off line gets found out. Then the 17th is classic links punishment if you pull one, with gorse-lined banks ready to snatch your tee shot and a raised green that makes the approach feel smaller than it looks. Play those two well and you'll pick up shots. Get them wrong and your card can unravel quickly.
Broomfield is shorter and a bit friendlier, which makes it ideal as a second round, a warm-up, or a breather if you've just been battling the wind on the main course. Both layouts share the same turf, the same wind and the same proper links character, so you're getting a genuine Scottish links experience no matter which one you choose.

The 1562 links course bares all the hallmarks of pure links golfs. Undulating fairways, fast greens and a prevailing coastal wind all add up to one of the toughest challenges on a golf course. However, the introduction of new tee positions means that the course is now much more accessible for the higher handicap golfer.

Where as distance is required to score well on the 1562, the Broomfield course requires a good touch and accuracy. Whilst the course does not appear to hold the same challenges as the 1562, the natural undulations and hazards means there is more than enough to ruin a scorecard.

An interesting links course that takes you out to the cliffs so the wind plays a big part. The dry summer has had an impact on the fairways but this is pure links golf, so expected and the greens were in great nick. We got caught behind a PGA event so play was slower than we would have liked but it did not affect our enjoyment at all. A special shout out to the pro shop who managed to get us an earlier tee time

Round ended up taking over 5 hours, partly due to fog but mainly as we were held up a large group of players from Holland who were to up to course standards and drinking all the way around. Would expect course to manage this better

Not a great course - basically a field going back and down playing the same course

Great historic golf course, but unless the Council do something about the sea erosion not only will they lose the course, they’ll lose the bloody town too!

This is wonderful golf course in design location and history The greens this year however were extremely slow and therefore awful to putt on despite having a good coverage of grass.. very strange why they were left so long and a bit dissappointing
