The New Course, St Andrews

Bordering the Old, The New Course is regarded by many as the best on the links, with some of the most famous holes in world golf.

After a gentle start, the New has many difficult driving holes, bordered tightly by huge banks of yellow-flowering gorse. Played into the teeth of a strong wind, the par-4 sixth is one of the toughest in St Andrews, while the par-3 ninth which skirts the Eden Estuary is a beast, often requiring a solid 3-wood.

New Course, St Andrews

Visitors should not be fooled by the name - there is little ‘new' about The New Course, having been laid out in 1895 by Old Tom Morris. Superbly established, the layout is a true gem, blending subtle short par-4s with a few extremely demanding holes, both long and short.

The route out and back takes golfers to the edge of the estuary, and with the immense quality of the course, it plays second fiddle to The Old Course only in terms of heritage and should always be included on a St Andrews golf tour itinerary.

Good course. Not that many holes that were particularly memorable for me, but all of them were a consistent test and in good condition. Struggles to differentiate itself from its neighbouring courses (Old & Jubilee) but if you enjoy links golf and the history of the location then it's certainly worth playing and is a good test, and a nice one to 'tick off the list'.

The best course on the complex itself. Not as beautiful or dramatic as Castle Course however for the links courses on the complex itself - this is the best track out of them all. Miles better than Old Course.

Played this course in vastly different conditions with perfect almost summery weather! Then managed to get to play Old Course straight after via Old Course Ballot.

The only negative on this course was an extremely rude employee who approached us on the course to emphatically shout that we we holding up play and needed to pick up the pace. Funny thing, up until the time we were approached, we saw no other players on the tees behind us and certainly no players on the fairways waiting for us to move forward. This outburst occurred in front of women who wanted to stop playing. My guess is that a caddy with an assigned partner had another gig that afternoon and surreptitiously contacted the intruder to push or play. This should never have happened at the guy at the clubhouse seemed disinterested when we reported the issue.

The new course was beautiful- it was just very narrow. I really enjoyed it.

Of all the 3 courses we played ( Jubilee and Old Course ) this was the best course. We were extremely lucky w/c 10th March that it was dry !!! Awesome 👏

Great idea to play the New Course before the Old Course to get used to the style of layout and the local weather (wind) conditions. Great fun. Challenging links course. Excellent clubhouse and changing rooms.

Was winter conditions so can't complain . A lot of bunkers not in play and fairway mats in place. Greens had been dressed and tined. But it's winter so no complaints

Played in cold conditions so course a little firmer than usual, but otherwise in great condition and a thoroughly enjoyable time as always .

Greens had been hollow tined and sandy two days prior, were disappointing. 4.5 hours round for a two ball does not help you concentrate on this difficult course. It’s a real challenge for serious golfers

The start of some of the fairways was to close to the tee for shorter hitters

Great course in magnificent condition. Some brilliant driving holes with very penal bunkers. Greens were very consistent and true…great holes around the estuary.

A great course that is tight with smaller quick greens. Personally I feel this course is a lot more difficult than the Old Course and is definitely worth playing.

An iconic golf course that you have to play if you come to St. Andrews. Once and done sort of deal. Course is challenging, good condition, tough bunkers, pretty views and lovely clubhouse. Expensive but it is St. Andrews. To be expected.
