Right on Alvor beach, the four-star Pestana Dom Joao II is a cracking base if your Algarve plan is simple: plenty of golf, plenty of sunshine and minimal faffing about with long transfers. You're well placed for some of the area's most popular rounds, with Alto, Gramacho, Pinta and Silves all within easy reach.
It's also a handy one for travel days. Faro Airport is around 50 minutes away, so you can land, check in and be thinking about that first tee time without losing half the day to the road. The big sell here is value, too. You get a proper beachfront location and comfortable rooms without paying five-star money, which is ideal if you'd rather put the budget into more golf (or a post-round feed in Alvor).
The Pestana group's reputation for reliable service shows throughout, from the reception desk to the general day-to-day running of the place. It's a straightforward, well-run hotel that lets you focus on what matters: getting out on the fairways and enjoying great golfing weather for much of the year. After your rounds, the beachfront setting and nearby Alvor town offer plenty of options for unwinding, whether that's a quiet evening by the water or exploring the local restaurants and bars. Alvor itself is close enough for an easy stroll, so you can keep evenings flexible.
Who is this for?
Golfers who want a beachside base near multiple Algarve courses, couples mixing golf with beach time and groups chasing solid value.
Who is it best for?
Mid-handicappers on a multi-course trip, societies using Alvor as a central base for the western Algarve and anyone prioritising convenience and coastal views over full-on resort luxury.

Designer Fream was aided by multiple major-winner Nick Price in creating the Gramacho Course, the second at Carvoeiro. The Gramacho is unique in that it has 18 sets of tees, but has 27 greens, making for a welcome variety. The 6,679 yard layout features many obstacles, including lakes, rocks and walls, as well as the almond, fig and olive trees that help to make the course so beautiful. The Gramacho has been selected to host the Ladies European Tour's finest players, and is a fascinating challenge.

Just ten minutes away is the Silves Course, the third on offer for guests at the Carvoeiro resort. Silves is a typical resort course, with generous rolling fairways, and a number of large water hazards. Bordered by palm and olive trees, the course affords terrific views of the mountains and the valley. The main difficulty is the severity of the green-side bunkers, so accurate approach shots are crucial around this delightful Algarve track.

Situated in a stunning private community in the Western Algarve, Alto was the last course to be designed by the legendary Sir Henry Cotton. The winding fairways and elevated greens are typical of Cotton's architectural philosophy, and ensure that there is a stern challenge for the low handicap players, whilst remaining fair for the average golfer. Set across two rolling hills, visitors will enjoy beautiful views of the Lagos Bay.

Rooms at Pestana Dom Joao II are bright and spacious, a welcome sight after 18 holes in the Algarve sun. Many have sea views, perfect for watching the sun set over the Atlantic with a cold drink in hand, and all come with the essentials for a comfortable golf break: air-conditioning (essential during summer rounds), satellite television, radio and a direct dial telephone. It's practical, comfortable accommodation that does exactly what a golf hotel should, provide a good night's sleep, a decent breakfast and a convenient base for your rounds.
Facilities work well for mixed groups. There are indoor and outdoor pools, plus a gym if you're the sort who likes to keep moving between rounds. If not everyone is golfing every day, you've got mini-golf and tennis courts close by, along with water sports in the local area thanks to the beachfront setting. It means there's enough to keep non-golfers or rest-day partners occupied while you're out chasing birdies.
Service is in line with what you'd expect from the Pestana group, with a well-run feel that suits early starts and relaxed, back-from-the-course afternoons. It's not a flashy luxury resort, but it ticks the boxes that matter on a golf trip: comfortable rooms, a great location and plenty to do when you're not out on the fairways.
Room types suit different group sizes and budgets, from standard doubles through to larger family rooms and sea-view upgrades. The layout works well for golf groups, with enough space to store clubs and kit without tripping over bags every time you move. If Alto, Gramacho, Pinta and Silves are on your hit list, this is a handy beachside base to build an Algarve Golf Holiday around.

Accommodation is tired but comfortable. Breakfast is good with lots of choice. There is a lack of sockets in the rooms which hopefully on refurbishing will be sorted. The staff are friendly. watch out for the service charge on your drinks this can be removed on request.

Hotel Dom Joao II. It is looking very tired, and several things in the rooms needed repairing. The bathrooms were also quite worn out. However, the daily maid service was excellent and could not be faulted. Despite the hotel issues, we had a great time and really appreciated the smooth organisation and support throughout our trip.
