0800 043 6644The winding fairways and elevated greens are typical of Cotton's architectural philosophy, and ensure that there is a stern challenge for the low handicap players, whilst remaining fair for the average golfer. Set across two rolling hills, visitors will enjoy beautiful views of the Lagos Bay.
The course is just shy of 7,000 yards, but that is mostly thanks to the monstrous 16th, which measures 661 yards and has appropriately been dubbed, ‘Gigante'.
Set amongst the pine, fig, almond and carob trees, and flanked by beautiful villas, Alto is a delightful place for a round of golf during your golf holiday in the Western Algarve.

Slow round following four balls greens spiked and sanded fairways ok good snacks in club house
This course was approximately a one hour drive from our hotel which we felt was too far
Nice course, quiet and enjoyable.
Confirming and collecting buggies not great
Rushed from airport to hotel and then off to Alto, very enjoyable and good course. Very disappointed that transport due to collect is one hour fifteen minutes after we finished but when we’d finished our round the bar and clubhouse had closed. A very bad experience.
too much up and down to our liking and holes over each others back and forth, not bad but as good golfers we would not recommend it
Lovely course, but some of the fairways were very tight for the long-hitters.
Great course....narrow with slopes on the greens to kill those who err...it was in great nick when we played. 4 in front took their time but sure the sun was shining!!
Great course and will definitely play it again. Could not get lunch at facility after round which was disappointment.
Beautiful mature course, with emphasis on getting off the tee well. Wayward tee shots were punished! Some great holes and plenty of doglegs mean accuracy was very important. Keep it on the fairway and the holes are accessbile. Very nice. Was busy the day we played, so no buggies, but with a trolley it was a pleasant walk with some beautiful villas lining the course.
Not the greatest course but reasonable
A good course, difficult in places and well maintained. Thought the clubhouse lacked atmosphere but we didn’t tee off until 10.30 so most had left by the time we finished.
Back 9 was better than the front 9. Front 9 is incredibly repetitive. Greens are in terrible condition and very patchy, throwing more and more sand onto them is not a fix!
My least favourite of the 3 courses - seemed a bit tired. The greens had recently(ish) been cored too.
This course was quite narrow and so tested our abilities which was good to see. Overall fairways were probably about right so no real complaints. However the greens were way below par with large areas covered in sand for reparation presumably. As well as this, they were not well mowed at all, which made putting slow and unpredictable.
Too many trees and narrow fairways! The greens were in poor condition.
Just the same tree lined wonderful course very challenging but enjoyable.
A nice, well maintained course. No on course facilities is a bit of a let down, especially in hot conditions. The club house closed shortly after we completed our round
A round spoilt by 2 groups of 4 in buggies who were so slow it took us 5 hours. So the course needs rangers. Greens were good and tees were poor. Club house was nice but didn’t get time for an after golf drink.
Spot on
Narrow course with few hazards. Course and play management perfect with no hold ups throughout 18 holes
Slighter tighter fairways.
Enjoyed the course
Wonderful first experience of golfing in Portugal.
Every thing good except for slow players length of course par fours very long unless you are a big hitter
Couldn't get buggies, not good enough when you are on a golf break.
Tough, narrow course. Played quite long with the elevated greens. Difficult if you don't get on in regulation.
Love this course, can be a challenge if you don’t read the hills correctly and some of the greens were tight with uphill approaches. Course in good condition, we both played well and cut our handicaps. Would visit here again
We walked the course which in hindsight wasn't the best thing to do as it is quite up and down. The greens weren't in great condition and a lot of them were elevated with pins right at the front or back which made it very difficult to get the ball close.
Alto is a very fair course, this course had a few areas that were a little bare, but on the whole good value for money. 8/10
We found the course to be quite difficult with tiny slopey greens. The service and facilities were very good.
Very tight course and least favourite. But still enjoyed.
Course was very nice, albeit lots of trees..... pace of play decent.
Slow at times
A pretty course that was enjoyable to play. On our second visit they slotted us in for an earlier tee time which was appreciated
Good challenge. With plenty of trees.
To many similar holes
Not a bad course, worth a visit
Great course, lots of dog legs. Greens and tees well maintained. Very tree lined fairways.
Very nice course, but all the fairways were tree-lined with quite tight fairways. This made it quite challenging if you weren't accurate off the tee. That said, a very nice and well maintained course. As we tee'd off early in the morning, we got around quickly with no delays. Overall a good mornings golf.
Greens in good shape for the time of year fairways looked like they needed some fertiliser as some were needing a early season boost
Compared to my home course, the condition was amazing, the fairways as good as our greens. Efficiently run. The course martial a little full of himself but we were sorted quite quickly. Even though the weather was awful, it was pretty slow (we went in after the 14th when we found two groups waiting on the 15th tee.
Had a good laugh
Bar was shut and locker rooms locked so we had to ask the buggy master to let us in after our round at 6.15 pm. Not good as no after round drink and our minibus was booked at 7.15
Good tight course where you don't need driver on every hole
Nice course very grumpy lady at Pro shop
Lot of sand on the greens. Slow play.
Unfortunately no food available on arrival. Also a 'global lithium shortage' meant we could only hire one buggy between 4. Course boggy in places and greens a bit crazy golf at times. No drinks cart service available out on the course
Much better than when last played 5 years ago. Some very tough par 4s that weren't reachable in 2 with the strong winds. Again more signage about where the trouble is would have been nice with some blind holes.
The course was in pretty good condition apart from the greens. They were lumpy with bumps and bare patches. If my home course greens were in this condition there would be a mutiny.
I enjoyed the course but a number of my party didn't like this one. The greens had just been tined which I think made them not like it
Nice course close to hotel
Again the fairways were soft through overwatering but the greens were the quickest of the 3 courses played. The difficulty of this course derives from the narrow fairways which are lined by trees or fences.
Best condition I have seen it in in the past 9 trips
Excellent experience on a proper and challenging course. Some real tough and well shaped holes with small firm and fast greens.
Great experience for straight shots
Use to be a member. Know it well. Narrow fairways, lots of raised greens
back 9 has been shortened which helps ..
Too many trees. Always beats me up, but fun had by all.
Lovely tight golf course. Fairways very green but a little overwatered. Green excellent. Ate after round and was good value in nice setting
Nobody on this course so obviously no slow play However the grass just off the fairway was so long difficult to find your ball also every green was above you and distances were difficult to work out
We didn’t like Alto so much. It was nice to play another course. It was too narrow, more than half the holes were a severe dog leg, and many greens were on a raised plateau that were very hard to hit.
Much easier course especially for us ladies who are longer hitters!! As the tees are ‘much’ further ahead in front of the men’s tees. Much flatter course compared to the other Pestana courses and less scenic but still pretty with lovely pine trees. Very enjoyable and pretty course.
Not a long course but very tight.Tree lined .The back nine has changed and the long par 5 16th has been shortened
The course was interesting in layout but the fairways were inconsistent and different grasses from hole to hole. The greens were a little sandy and I’m not sure the quality was as good as the other Pestana courses we played ( VilaSol and Vale de Pinta)
Good course for right-handed faders. A nightmare for left-handed faders, as one of our group found out! Friendly, efficient - and relatively cheap. Recommended.
One of the trickier pestana courses due to it being more established and having more trees meaning it's not as open as some of the others. Course was in good condition with greens well maintained. Need to keep it straight to get the best out of your round
Nice course, the only complaint if any was that the first nine holes are pretty much the same, not as challenging as we hoped
Was a good course to start the week as got you thinking and wasn't to difficult front 9 was wet but playble and back nine was really good
Much better than alamos. Weird how they said no rain to us at alamos was cuase for bad condition yet alto was as green as anything and greens 10x better? Alto was good and would ply3 again.
this course was very wet over watered
Tight course very Portuguese with overhanging trees but loved it
Again course very quiet which was very good.
Having been here a few times over the last 5 years it has definitely deteriorated. Greens are in poor condition and very patchy. The saving grace is the lovely club house.
Again buggies an issue but finally came good
This course favours the straight hitter with narrow fairways lined on both sides with tall trees all too keen to block your next shot to the green if you go off the fairway.
This is the most difficult of the Pestana courses and I have played all of them over the past couple of years. It's sometimes viewed as the poor relation compared to Pinta, Gramacho and Silves, but it's a lovely parkland course with some very challenging holes. Try playing double dog leg par 4's. This is a course for accuracy, rather than distance. We played 3 stableford over 3 course and this was the lowest scoring course for our group by some distance. If you fancy yourself as a golfer, you must play here. Sorts the men out from the boys!
Again a lovely course in great condition. Massively favoured the straight hitters in our group which was only fair I suppose as Gramacho v.good for long hook/draw. We were off directly after the members roll-up so were able to play at good pace which was nice.
Excellent all the buggies were over priced
Course was very wet but there was no slow play bar food and drinks over priced
Lovely course but buggy's expensive.
We did not enjoy this course Too many holes are up hill with upturned saucer greens Too many holes feel similar We will not play it again All other Pestana courses are more enjoyable to play
