Royal Cromer was granted Royal status by Queen Victoria and it's perched on a clifftop on the north-east corner of the Norfolk coastline, serving up big North Sea views from the moment you step onto the property. You're looking down over the sandy beaches far below, with the North Sea stretching out in front of you.

It's one of England's oldest courses and it sits in the historic seaside town of Cromer. You're only 40 minutes from Norwich, so it's easy to reach, and the rest of the Norfolk broads are within striking distance, with Sheringham and Hunstanton both close by.

The club has a big reputation for a warm welcome and the clubhouse is steeped in history. I'll admit it, I'm a sucker for old clubhouse history, and you could easily lose an hour here just browsing the photographs, trophies and club records.

The course itself plays as a proper clifftop test, with the wind a constant factor and the views a constant distraction. Fairways run along the cliff edge and through gorse-lined corridors, demanding accuracy off the tee and smart course management when the breeze picks up. The greens are typically firm and fast, rewarding well-struck approach shots and punishing anything short or wayward.

Who is this for?
A weekend Norfolk escape where you can play a proper old-school club, enjoy sea air and still be within easy reach of Norwich for food, pubs and a bit of life after the round.

Who is it best for?
Players who like links-style conditions without the full 'dunes and rumpled fairways' stereotype, and who don't mind the wind asking a few awkward questions off the tee.

Royal Cromer Golf Club

The layout, originally designed by Tom Morris in 1888 was founded by the Prince of Wales who later became King Edward VII. The course has had many improvements from the likes of James Braid, JH Taylor and most recently Frank Pennick into the fantastic layout it now is. The 6,528 yards are played out amongst undulating, gorse-decorated sandy hills entwined with grassy valleys.

The course comes live around the turn with a strong stretch of holes from the 6th. The signature 14th hole starts a tough closing run and has a fully working lighthouse off the side of the green. Considered to be one of Norfolk’s finest golf courses, Royal Cromer is renowned for its friendly atmosphere and extends a warm welcome to all visitors making it an ideal stop on a golf tour along the rugged Norfolk coastline.

Royal Cromer fully lived up to its reputation as one of the top courses in the UK. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience and was definitely the highlight of the week. The weather stayed mostly dry, but an occasionally brisk wind added to the challenge offered. The views across the course (and up and down the coast) just added to the overall experience, which made it one of the best days of golf I (and most of the group) have had!

This is a well laid out links course with some challenging holes and you need to follow the notes in the course guild to stay out of trouble. We will be back and I'm sure the welcome will as warm as it was this time. Highly recommend this club.

Course very busy and no buggy available despite trying to pre-book. A few quirky holes but definitely challenging. We preferred Sheringham. Friendly staff in both Pro shop and clubhouse.
