One of the jewels in the Costa del Sol's golfing crown, San Roque Old Course is often talked about as a Sotogrande must-play and it's easy to see why once you've stood on those tight, tree-framed tees. Dave Thomas's original design has a proper reputation with tour pros and everyday members alike. I'll be honest, it's one of those courses where you feel it from the opening tee shot.
The setting alone makes the Old Course special. Rolling Andalusian hills frame every hole, while established cork trees punctuate fairways and create natural corridors that force you to think carefully about every approach. Course management is everything here. You'll find bunkers that pinch landing areas off the tee, plus smaller greens than many neighbouring courses, so iron play really matters. If you're used to wide resort fairways, this is a different day out. Keep it in play, take your medicine when you're blocked by cork trees and you'll enjoy it far more than trying to force hero shots.
The 17th hole is the standout. This par-5 meanders beautifully through cork trees before climbing to an elevated green ringed by sand. It's reachable in two for longer hitters, but the risk-reward calculation is real. Get it wrong and you can easily drop two or three shots in the closing stretch.
San Roque Old Course has hosted stages of European Tour Qualifying School and The Spanish Open, so you're walking fairways that have tested the best players in Europe. You can see that pedigree in the way the holes ask questions, especially on approach where the smaller greens don't give you much slack. Golfers return year after year because this is one of the most complete tests in Sotogrande and a layout that rewards strategy over power. If you're building a Sotogrande golf break, San Roque Old is one that's well worth slotting into the itinerary, especially if your group enjoys a more strategic test.
Who is this for?
Golfers looking for a genuine championship test in Sotogrande, with a preference for strategic, tree-lined layouts over wide-open resort courses.
Who is it best for?
Confident mid-handicappers and above who enjoy course management challenges, smaller target greens and the chance to play a layout with serious European Tour pedigree.

San Roque Club, Old Course
San Roque's Old Course was officially unveiled in 1990, and was designed by the legendary Dave Thomas, the man responsible for so many terrific projects at home and abroad. Following revision work on the bunkering by Seve Ballesteros, the Old Course hosted the European Tour's finest professionals for the 2005 Spanish Open.
The course is an exacting proposition, whose tight, sloping fairways wind through the cork trees that make the estate so famous, affording incredible views of the surrounding mountains. The inward half is the more spectacular, traversing the rolling hills and demanding brave carries over the cavernous gullies. The closing holes take in the shimmering lakes at the centre of the resort, presenting a finish as beautiful as it is challenging.
With an internationally renowned golf academy and two of the region's finest championship course, visiting the San Roque Club is an essential component of any good golfing holiday in Southern Spain.

Wonderful club house. Great facilities. The course was in great condition. We really enjoyed this course. Every hole was different. The greens were quite subtle and difficult to read.

Always a treat to play San Roque Old. The whole area had been battered by rain since November but the course was in very decent condition. Greens running about a 10 which with the slopes was plenty fast for us.

The best of the three we played in the view of just about all of us. The extra touches from the staff - free fruit, slushie, etc just about put it on top. I had a nightmare as trapped a nerve in my elbow approaching the first tee and couldn't play more than a couple of holes, but I stayed in the buggy and can confirm it was a cracking course. They were all superb to be honest, but if I could give more than five stars, this one would get them.
