Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club sits on the Lancashire coast in the North West of England, where James Braid laid out one of the region's most testing championship links in 1906. The course runs through classic duneland terrain, with sea breezes, thick heather and gorse lining the fairways, and views out across the Irish Sea that remind you exactly where you are. Underfoot it's firm, springy links turf when it's running, so the ground game is always an option if you fancy it.

This is championship golf in the truest sense. Southport & Ainsdale hosted The Ryder Cup in 1933 and 1937, has welcomed The Women's Open and The Amateur Championship, and regularly served as final qualifying when The Open came to nearby Royal Birkdale Golf Club. It's regularly ranked among the best 50 courses in Great Britain and, I'll admit, if you're a links geek it's a name you'll want ticked off.

Braid's design demands accuracy off the tee, smart decisions around the heather, and the ability to cope when the wind turns up and yardages stop behaving. Miss the short grass and you can quickly be in damage-limitation mode, so it rewards patient, thinking golf more than swinging out of your boots. The heather can turn a good scorecard into a grind quickly, so course management matters as much as power.

It's also a brilliant base for a Southport links tour. Within a short drive you've got Hillside Golf Club, Formby Golf Club and West Lancashire Golf Club, making this corner of the North West one of the best multi-course breaks you can put together in the UK. If you're planning a UK links break, it's an easy one to pair with those three for a high-quality long weekend.

Who is this for?
Golfers who want to play a genuine championship links test with Ryder Cup history, set in classic duneland with sea views, heather and wind, all within easy reach of other top-tier links courses in the Southport area.

Who is it best for?
Mid-to-low handicappers who enjoy strategic links golf, groups building a multi-course tour of the North West, and anyone chasing Ryder Cup venues or final Open qualifying courses with real pedigree.

Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club

Braid's creation is set amidst the sand dunes of England's best golfing stretch, and demands patient, accurate ball-striking, as the penalties for straying off-line are severe. There are many superb holes to negotiate at Southport and Ainsdale, not least the charming par-3s such as the 8th and 13th.

As a quintessential links track, lovers of seaside golf should ensure a visit during a tour of Southport's magnificent courses. With an offering of beautiful views, sea breeze, heather and gorse, you will be certain to have a real challenge.

Unusually, Southport and Ainsdale opens with a short hole, so make sure you sharpen you iron play on the range before teeing off.

Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club is ranked as one of the best courses in North West England

Very firm and fast when we played it. Lots of blind shots, so take a course guide with you. As with any course, if you avoid trouble it’s very scoreable.

Great challenge especially with the constant wind. Club pro was not very welcoming but catering staff were very attentive. Recommend the 9-hole breakfast

This course is an underappreciated gem. It is imaginative in design and in great condition. Not famous, but therefore a great value for the money. Very friendly, welcoming staff.
