Measuring a mighty 7,208 yards from the back markers, Royal Troon has grown into a course of true Championship pedigree. Dating back to 1878, this traditional links course features an out and back set of nines, meaning you are likely to have one nine being into the wind and the other down, along with being at the furthest point from the clubhouse on the 10th tee.
The opening holes at Royal Troon run alongside the Firth of Clyde and provide a stunning set of vistas towards the Ailsa Craig so synonymous with another Ayrshire Open Championship course, The Ailsa at Turnberry, as well as the spectacular Isle of Arran. With a host of blind shots and hazards hidden from the tee, the course comes alive from the 8th Hole known as The Postage Stamp, the shortest par-3 on The Open Championship Rota. As you return to the clubhouse, the inward nine is considerably harder due to the lack of wind assistance.
A regular feature with The World's Top 100 Golf Courses as well as hosting The Open Championship 9 times, it is easy to see why so many of the world's best golfers have enjoyed their times at the South West of Scotland links experience.
As a 9-time Open Championship venue, Royal Troon has been the host to several memorable moments in the history of The Claret Jug.
The 1st Open at Troon was in 1923 where Arthur Havers claimed his maiden Open win, defeating a chasing pack including golfing legend Walter Hagen. Further Champions at Troon include South Africa's famed putting guru, Bobby Locke who won by 1 shot from Roberto di Vicenzo in 1950 with a closing round of 68. Arnold Palmer won his 2nd Open Championship in 1962 by no less than 6 shots. Tom Watson was also a winner at Troon in 1973 in what was his 4th Open Championship win.
It is however 2016 that will live long in not only in Royal Troon history but also in The Open Championship. The final round duel between America's Phil Mickelson and Sweden's Henrik Stenson was one filled with birdies, eagles and some of the best golf witnessed in a Major Championship. Stenson claimed victory over Mickelson by 3 shots, his -20 total stands as the lowest score in an Open Championship and his closing round of 63 tying the low round ever scored in a Major at the time. Mickelson's -17 total tied the previous Open Championship scoring record of Greg Norman and saw himself 3 shots short of Stenson but 11 ahead of J.B. Holmes in 3rd place, highlighting just how head and shoulders above the field Henrik and Phil were for this week.
