West Lancashire is one of England's oldest clubs, founded in 1873, and it still plays like a proper coastal links where the weather writes half the scorecard. Get a warm, breezy day and you'll see the ball zip along firm turf, fairways running fast and greens receptive if you've shaped the right approach. Catch it in a stiff sea wind and suddenly you're taking an extra club or two, focusing on keeping it down and accepting that par is a very good score.
Classic linksland with rumpled fairways, pot bunkers and tight lies that expose any sloppy contact. Greens reward the right side of the fairway and a bit of local savvy, punishing anything that drifts offline or comes in too hot. The routing changes direction regularly so you're rarely comfortable with the wind for long, which keeps you honest and thinking two shots ahead.
If you're putting together a North West England golf break and want something traditional, strategic and refreshingly unpolished, West Lancashire is a cracking shout. Include West Lancashire on your next UK Golf Break with Your Golf Travel.

The layout sits on traditional linksland, with the kind of natural undulation and firm turf that rewards good ball-striking and punishes anything loose. Expect to shape the ball, keep it low when needed and think your way around rather than overpowering it. Summer conditions bring firm, fast-running fairways and greens that demand precision, while spring and autumn can add a bit of softness without losing the strategic challenge.
This is much more about placement and decision-making than simply swinging hard. You'll often be picking a target that allows for a gust, choosing a flighted shot and accepting that the "safe" side is sometimes the only sensible option. When the ground is running, the course asks you to use it, not fight it, which is exactly what many golfers come looking for on a seaside trip.
The superb clubhouse affords panoramic views across the 9th and 18th greens to the Mersey, Anglesey and the Welsh Hills, and the balcony is the perfect place for a deserved beer after tackling the links as part of a tour of the Southport area.
West Lancashire is a regular choice for Open Championship Qualifying, including 1976, when Bernhard Langer, Ian Woosnam, Nick Faldo and Sandy Lyle all took part.
West Lancashire Golf Club is ranked as one of the best courses in North West England

Very friendly staff and greeting, which included a gift. The course was extremely well presented and a good challenge without being too tough, at least of the Yellows. The Whites would have been a different story as it was pretty windy when we played it.

Really nice course and would love to play it again. Good challenge but very fair. Not overly difficult that you walk off the 18th having really struggled, but rather really enjoyed the challenge. Good shots are rewarded, whereas some of the other tracks we played, a good shot could still end up in a pot bunker. I’d recommend this course anytime!

From the moment we walked in all of the staff were really welcoming. What a lovely course to play, the attention to detail and the helpful hints was greatly appreciated. It’s a really tough track especially when the wind gets up! You’ll need your A game to play if it’s windy! Pure links at it’s best, definitely recommend this course, will be visiting again.
