My Guide to Europe's Greatest Solheim Cup Golf Courses
✍️ Suzann Pettersen | ⏰ 8 min read
There is a moment, just before the first tee shot of a Solheim Cup, when everything goes quiet.
Not silent, never silent. You still hear camera shutters clicking, someone coughing in the grandstand, the low murmur of thousands waiting. But inside your own world, there is a stillness. The air feels heavier. Your senses sharpen. You become acutely aware of everything, the ground beneath your feet, the weight of the club in your hands, the consequence of what comes next.
I have played major championships all over the world. I have hit shots under pressure that changed my career. But nothing, absolutely nothing, compares to representing Europe in a Solheim Cup on home soil.
Long before I ever wore European colours, I watched the pioneers battle at Dalmahoy and St Pierre. Those venues established something important, that when the Solheim Cup comes to Europe, it becomes more than a tournament. It becomes a test of nerve, belief and resilience.
When the matches begin, the courses themselves seem to change. Fairways narrow. Greens feel smaller. Every decision carries weight. These are not just golf courses anymore. They are stages where careers and sometimes legacies are defined.
Over the course of my career, I experienced the Solheim Cup as a rookie, a teammate, the player who holed the winning putt and eventually as Captain. Each venue left its mark on me.
These are the courses that shaped my Solheim Cup journey and why every serious golf traveller should experience them.
Yes, and that is part of what makes not only The Solheim Cup but golf so special.
Many of Europe’s premier host venues are accessible to travelling golfers. Courses like Gleneagles, Finca Cortesin and Killeen Castle welcome visitors and offer the rare opportunity to play the same holes, face the same approach shots and stand on the same greens where matches were decided.
For golf travellers, this adds something deeper to the experience. You are not simply playing a championship course. You are stepping into a moment in golf history.
I can still see the putt. Eight feet. Slightly downhill. Left edge. The 18th green at Gleneagles is shaped like a natural amphitheatre, and in 2019 it felt like every person there was holding their breath. When the ball dropped, the sound arrived a split second later, a wave of noise that hit you physically.
That was my final competitive shot. And there is nowhere in the world I would rather it had happened.
The Ultimate Championship Test
Designed by Jack Nicklaus, the PGA Centenary Course was built for elite match play. It is visually generous from the tee but that can be highly deceptive. The real challenge begins with the approach shots.
Distance control is everything here. You can hit a solid iron and still find yourself in trouble if you are even a yard off your yardage. The creeping bentgrass greens are beautifully contoured and the bunkering is positioned exactly where you do not want to miss.
What many visitors do not expect is how exposed the closing stretch feels. The Scottish wind shifts constantly, meaning shots that looked straightforward suddenly require complete commitment.
The 19th Hole at The Century Bar
Gleneagles offers one of the great resort experiences in golf. The setting alone, the Perthshire hills, the crunch of gravel on the long approach to the hotel, the sense of quiet isolation, creates anticipation before you even reach the first tee. After a cold round, sitting down in the Century Bar with a single malt, replaying key moments from the day, is mandatory.
The Verdict: Gleneagles gives you something rare: the chance to experience a modern championship venue exactly as it was meant to be played. Speak to the Your Golf Travel team to build your ultimate Gleneagles golf package today.

When I arrived at Finca Cortesin in 2023 as Captain, my perspective was completely different. I was not thinking about my own swing. I was studying where matches could turn, where pressure would build and where players would have to make uncomfortable decisions.
A Masterclass in Visual Contrast
Cabell B. Robinson created one of the most visually striking routing plans in Europe. The contrast is unforgettable, bright white silica bunkers, deep green fairways and the Andalucian mountains rising in the distance.
The greens, resurfaced with ultra-dwarf Bermuda ahead of the tournament, were exceptional. They were lightning-fast and incredibly pure, but they demanded total commitment. The driveable par-4 4th hole became a pivotal theatre during the matches. It tempts you into aggression but that decision always comes with consequence.
Pure Andalusian Escapism
Finca Cortesin offers complete escape. The atmosphere is calm, private and unhurried. Everything, from the pristine practice facilities to the whitewashed hotel courtyards, allows you to focus fully on recovery. You play, you dine on world-class Mediterranean cuisine and you prepare to do it all again.
The Verdict: For golfers seeking championship golf in warm winter conditions, there are few better experiences in Europe. It is demanding, beautiful and immaculately presented. Discover bespoke Finca Cortesin travel itineraries here.

Ireland understands golf in a different way. At Killeen Castle in 2011, the crowds did not simply observe. They stayed through rain, wind and cold. They believed in us, and you could feel that electric energy radiating throughout the estate.
Strategic Parkland Perfection
Jack Nicklaus designed a course that rewards supreme discipline. You cannot overpower Killeen Castle. You must position your ball carefully and think your way through mature oaks and imposing water hazards. When the Irish weather arrives, controlling your trajectory and staying patient becomes essential. Every approach shot on the closing stretch matters.
Authentic Irish Hospitality
The atmosphere in the shadow of the 12th-century castle reflects everything that makes Irish golf special: warmth, authenticity and simplicity. Conversations flow easily over a perfectly poured pint of Guinness. It feels entirely genuine.
The Verdict: Offering a pure parkland experience, this is a phenomenal contrast to the coastal links layouts and belongs on any serious East Coast itinerary. Book your Irish golf tour with Your Golf Travel today.

Sweden
Barsebäck is shaped entirely by its surroundings. The inland holes move through quiet pine forests, demanding precision. Then suddenly, the course opens toward the Öresund strait and the wind becomes the absolute defining factor. Club selection becomes less certain. It is honest golf. The course does not trick you; it simply asks you to perform.
Germany
St. Leon-Rot feels engineered for elite competition. Water influences nearly every key decision. The fairways are immaculate but they offer no comfort. Position matters far more than power. It is a modern track that rewards discipline and ruthlessly exposes mistakes under pressure.
What makes Solheim Cup venues different is not just their design or conditioning. It is the memory they hold.
You remember the decisions you made. You remember the moments where you felt completely certain, and the moments where you did not. These courses ask something of you. They asked everything of me during my career.
Now, they offer something special to every golf traveller who tees it up. Not just a round of golf. A connection to something much bigger than the game itself.
