Malmaison Aberdeen

Malmaison Aberdeen is a smart pick if you want proper golf by day and a bit of city life afterwards. You're based in Aberdeen's West End, with Union Street and the main restaurant and bar run close enough that you can be out for dinner in minutes, then back in bed without a taxi mission.

From a golf point of view, this location works. You've got Royal Aberdeen, Murcar Links and Trump International within easy reach, plus plenty of other cracking options up and down the Aberdeenshire coast if you're stitching together a multi-course tour. It's a good base for groups who want to play serious links and still have somewhere lively to talk it through afterwards. (And yes, the wind will come up at some point. It always does.)

The hotel sits in a classic granite building with Malmaison's trademark bold interiors, so it feels more boutique and modern than a traditional country house stay. If your trip is all about golf, good food and a strong whisky back bar rather than resort-style practice facilities, you're looking in the right place.

Who is this for?
Golfers, couples and small groups who want links golf within easy reach and a city base with loads of dining and nightlife nearby.

Who is it best for?
Societies and groups who like a good bar as much as a good back nine, plus golfers who want boutique style over a resort set-up.

Accommodation at Malmaison Aberdeen

Inside, Malmaison Aberdeen has 79 boutique-style rooms with air conditioning, wi-fi and 24-hour room service, handy if you're rolling in late after travel or you've got an early tee time and want breakfast on your schedule. Rooms are modern and comfortable, with a city-hotel feel rather than classic tartan-and-antlers.

The hotel offers different room categories, so if you're travelling with golf bags and the usual extra kit, it's worth stepping up a level for more space. Standard rooms are compact but cleverly designed, while Superior rooms give you a bit more floor space and larger bathrooms. If you want to spread out, or you're staying a few nights, ask about the larger rooms or suites when you book. Some of the suites feature original period details, exposed brickwork and high ceilings that give a real sense of the building's character.

All rooms come with blackout curtains and complimentary wi-fi. Housekeeping is thorough, and the 24-hour room service menu covers everything from late-night snacks to full breakfasts, handy if you're teeing off early at Cruden Bay and want to eat before you leave.

Food and drink is a big plus here. The Brasserie is an easy, no-fuss option for a steak and a decent bottle of red, with a menu that leans French with Scottish ingredients. Expect dishes like Aberdeen Angus steaks, locally landed fish and classic bistro staples done well. Portions are generous, the wine list is solid, and the atmosphere strikes a good balance between lively and comfortable. It's popular with locals as well as hotel guests, which is always a good sign.

Breakfast is a proper cooked affair with all the usual options plus smoked salmon, haggis and black pudding for those who want a full Scottish send-off before a round.

For a nightcap, The Snug is the obvious move, with a serious whisky list (over 100 whiskies) and staff who'll happily point you towards something you'll actually enjoy, whether you're a peat monster or more of a Speyside sort. There's also a good selection of craft beers, cocktails and wines if whisky isn't your thing.

There's also an on-site spa offering treatments including sports massages, facials and body therapies, which is ideal if you've walked 36 or you've arrived with the shoulders already tight. There's a small gym with cardio equipment and weights too, useful if you need to loosen up before tackling Royal Aberdeen's back nine. If you're planning a weekend visit, book treatments ahead as slots can go quickly.

Overall, Malmaison Aberdeen is a very solid option for golfers who want a stylish, central base with good food, a great bar and easy access to both the city and the surrounding courses. It's not a golf resort, so don't expect a pro shop or practice facilities on site, but as a comfortable, well-located hotel with character and personality, it delivers what it promises.
