Montgomerie Course at Celtic Manor

Absolutely atrocious. Course was effectively unplayable with standing water throughout the course, on the fairways, tees etc. Players were losing balls on the fairways as they were getting plugged and conditions were appalling. Any other course in the country would be closed, yet we were forced to have to play it as it remained open. No warnings given by starter or any complimentary offers to compensate the fact the course was unplayable. Really poor show from the resort to keep sending players, who have spent a large amount of money to attend the resort, out on the courses with no compensation or even a complimentary drink or snack or anything. Felt it was extremely cheeky to also suggest we wanted to join their daily promotion of paying £15 to get various rewards

Always good course to play it hard and icy but to be expected

We only played 9 holes as the course was in a mess. The fairways were so muddy you couldn’t see your ball. In my opinion the course should not have been open. Very disappointing.

The course is a good challenge, quite hilly and the fairway’s were quite muddy in places but we did play mid-October so you must expect this. The whole group enjoyed the course and would definitely like to play it again in summer.

Course was very boggy but we did go in November so what you’d expect at this time of year. Will definitely return in the summer.

Dry challenging course with lots of undulating & few holes have long walks from green to tee, we had buggies but the other 2 didn’t which slowed the pace down & you will be paired up if there’s only 2 of you. The course is great but challenging & the greens like lightning

Course was wet and boggy. Starter let groups of four split into two’s and slow groups were warned several times to speed up, but no action. Other groups jumped in front as it was dark. Meaning we couldn’t finish round.

A lovely course and very challenging would love to play it again during the summer.

Greens on rhis course, best of the 3 courses. Fairways in decent condition. Slow play due to 4 ball in front who refused to allow us to play through. Marshalls should have been on the course chasing up speed of play.

The course was in great shape, the greens however, were like lightning, and the pins was in difficult positions. But a good challenge.

Great course, no buggies left so had to walk it not happy as ygt told me they couldn't reserve us buggies wouldn't have booked if I knew we had to walk the hardest course .

The Mongomerie is a very well thought out course. The bunkers are strategically placed so accuracy and shot selection was imperative. The views were fantastic.

Wow this course is amazing. Played here before in bad weather and didn't appreciate it at all yesterday bright sunshine little wind . 1st group out as two ball felt like course to selves .

The course is very demanding and presents a great challenge. The greens were in excellent condition and presented many problems. Some of the bunkers needed attention and the fairways were very worn in places but we attributed that to the very hot weather we have experienced over the summer

Great course and very challenging - super slow round due to other groups walking and cart path only. Fairways were dry so should be able to drive buggies on.

Greens very good A lot of traps about 200yds and 250yrs And around the greens Ruff was short Dry fairways as expected as we have had not of lot of rain a good tough round

No starters on the tee box( had to find them in the house beside the tee for scorecards etc) Waiting on every tee box they 18 holes, the round took 5hrs 55mins. Will never play this place again, the course was really Good but it just seems that Celtic manor don’t care about this place for golf reasons.

Very good and challenging course, most holes are playing blind but works well again fairways scorched but can’t always be help with weather, the more preferable of the two courses.

Do not play this course without a buggy. Did 28000 steps to get round this course. Beautiful views and green, but fairways where hard and the grass was brown.

The course hadnt seen much water and most fairways were burnt out- tee boxes and greens in good condition. Very slow round

Very dry & fiery course this year. It was a test of ball control and ability.

We walked with buggies in the heatwave, think hiring a Sherpas would have been more apt. The course needs marshalling to speed up slow play

Course lovely . £55 buggy and gotta stick to paths so even if you hit the fairway expect a long walk!! Surely this can be addressed for future golfers there as its a joke! The vale and other places don't do nothing like this £55 alot of money per buggy. For this reason won't be returning unfortunately as we do 3/4 trips a year as a 4 ball

Beautiful setting for a challenging but not too long course. Greens are in amazing shape. Only 1 improvement I would suggest is a few fairway markers to help with tee shots on the blind tee shot holes

Fantastic course with superb greens. Fairways were very hard due to heat wave which made it difficult to keep the ball on the Fairway as they nearly all slope either right or left. It is a real test of your golfing ability, but was very enjoyable. Would recommend hiring a buggy as there are some long walks between holes.

Tough course, well we did play in July with 50Mph winds and rain but we still all really enjoyed the course. The greens are a serious test.

The pin positions and speed were some of the hardest we have ever played. Was impossible to hold the greens and a simple tap down hill sent you off the green 20ft away! It was a super test.

The play was slow but the course was fine

Everything about the course was fine but it was ruined by the fact it took 6 hours to play we had 3 groups back logged on each tee taking way to long and losing interest in even playing

Great course

We were playing in temperatures in excess of thirty degrees and no drinks buggy out on the course which is poor

Very tough walk. 8.5 miles up some big hills. We had a few in our group that needed buggies due to health issues. They still walked 5 miles as its cart path only.

Would never return to the Mongomerie. A terrible layout, made worse by playing the course the wrong way around. Very undulating, it had a couple of good holes. Its main asset was the condition of the greens which were superb, and very quick. We walked which was a mistake really, but not being allowed to drive the buggies on the fairways is silly in dry conditions. The check in process was ridiculous, go to one building, register then walk 300 yards to the driving range for them to then say they have received an email, to then be directed to the 1st tee. The signage was poor, felt like it was a chore playing golf to be honest, couldn’t wait to get off the course for a pint.

This is my favourite course out of the 3, this is a bit more interesting thank the 2010

A Slow round, not due to the course, more to do with the walking between some greens and the next tee box, however this is somewhat made bearable with some of the stunning views of the 2010 course

Fantastic condition like the other courses! Definitely recommend a buggy! Beautiful views and interesting holes with the course in supper condition!

Played the course on the last day of our 3 day trip, but pleased we did as was the shortish of the 3 courses at the resort. Very testing course especially with wind in your face and some of the views are fantastic. Greens are good and challenging as you would expect. I would advise anyone to use a buggy as its a very testing walk up and down the valley's and tee boxes can be a bit of a ride between holes. The only issue with buggies you have to stick to the cart paths, but trust me its not a problem. The Roman Road club house is only a 5 minute walk from the 1st/18th holes, so use that for changing and checking in for your tee time and buggy hire. The course is a great test to end a 3 day trip and the facilites up at the Roman Road club house are excellent.

The course has some tuff holes short but tuff great condition

5 years ago they changed the course around so 1st hole was the 10th. It would be preferable to change it back to what it was as suits the player experience. Between dome holes was a long walk which it planned correctly could be reduced.

Challenging - recommend getting a buggy as lots of hills!

Was very tricky but great fun.

Great course but extremely hilly and some large distances between greens and tees. A buggy is almost essential for this course, which was not made clear beforehand.

Our experience was poor. The main reason was that many of us weere using electric trolleys. Most of the walks between green abd next tee were excesssive and on one hole was about half a mile. Everybody should be advised that they will need a buggy.

Greens were like snooker tables which took a while to get used to but the views were amazing, try to get a buggy for this course as the walks between holes are challenging and long!!

lovely to play

The Montgomery course was a fantastic course to play and was in top condition, thanks to the ground staff working tirelessly throughout the day. The round was about right in terms of pace even for a busy time of year, buggies certainly helped with the distance from green to tee though as there was quite a distance between some. The greens were immaculate and the nice weather played its part. The course is definitely more difficult than a lot that I play regularly but is still suitable for all levels of golfer. I’ll definitely be back!

Trying to Pair members with a 3 ball group is a joke, we refused to play with them Members got a buy assy and slowed play up

Great course but round ruined by slow play. The refreshment buggy was seen but unfortunately No course marshallers seen. We did raise this point a couple of times but no action taken. Course was in good condition, greens were very challenging and a good speed.

With the amount of golf that gets played on the course it was in remarkable condition. The round was very slow. We were a group of four who all carried and it's a tough course to walk but we had no problem keeping up with groups in front in buggies. There were a lot of golfers who hadn't appeared to play much golf before and this is a tough course to learn how to play on.

Great course and fun to play. However very hilly, which could have been made aware of and buggy's highly recommend. Greens were fast and very well kept. Some really scenic holes. PLay was pretty slow which was frustrating but weather was great so didnt matter too much. Signage could also be improved ;)

A very difficult and extremely undulating course which would not have been helped by having a buggy as they had to stay on the paths. Very difficult to walk.The nines are the wrong way round. Fairways and tee boxes in below average conduction.

all our group enjoyed the montgomery more than Roman road due to the course set up. required to be straighter here than Roman Road and more character to the holes. again cart paths far away would recommend carrying if possible but long walks from greens to tees. would play again

My favourite of the 3 courses, beautiful views, great variety of holes. Would come back to play this course alone let alone including the other 2 on site.

The course was average but hard in certain point I think the weather was a key factor though as rained both days but overall definitely going back for a third time n hope experience is better

Very hilly

I marked the round hard mainly due to my poor golf. As to the course it was very nice although I think the fairways could have done with a little rain and the greens were very tricky for our "average" golf ability

This great course disappointed me this time. The worst condition I have seen it in. I understand we have just come out of a wet winter but it didn’t have that special feeling it normally does.

I suppose it's that time of year but the greens were dressed & no one advises you from proshop. Great course with challenging holes. Buggies in use but was not able to take onto fairways which for a few of our group prove to be a nightmare Stunning holes all very different.

Less forgiving. The views were amazing. But same as last time. The half way house was expensive. Great course. Would recommend a buggy as it is very hilly.

A really enjoyable experience. The course is a very challenging layout, but there were lots of varied holes which made it really interesting. It was quite wet, but that is understandable in March. The greens were well kept and the facilities were impressive. The only major surprise was the length of walks between greens and tees, which were really long. It was also a very challenging walk due to the changes in elevation throughout the course.

Played this course with 15 people and we all enjoyed every moment of it. It’s a very hilly course and took us 5.30 hours to complete our round as 4 balls but it was worth the money. I would definitely play this course and get a buggy next time.

Hard course green fast views amazing

A very pleasant surprise in the quality of this course staff all around the resort were extremely helpful and polite and friendly would recommend a buggy rather than walking would benefit most but overall a fantastic experience

A fantastic course - some stunning holes

Loved the Montgomerie course. Some really well designed holes, with plenty of challenging lay-outs and undulating greens in good condition.

I think the favourite of the three with the backdrop of the main hotel. Clubhouse and service was outstanding, not short staffed like most tourist places in the UK, perfect in every way.

Hardest of the 3 courses. Definitely need a buggy.

The course is good. The issue we had was that buggies aren't compulsory. The course was far too busy with a mixture of group sizes, some with buggies and some without. This meant that with 10 minute intervals between tee times, the course became completely jammed up. As a result, unfortunately we left after playing 14 holes as two groups were on each tee box at the same time. The course is lovely but this situation needs to be reviewed.

Played the 2010 instead, got a good deal £49 each inc buggy.

it blows my mind how they have let the course get this bad !!! the bunkers were shocking, some were like concrete and others the sand would come over your feet, greens weedy, and in terrible condition for this amount of money i wouldn't bother, i have played better condition courses for £30

Again was not disappointed fantastic course

Extremely hard work on the walking side, some very steep climbs and descents to deal with, buggies are available but they have to stick to the paths which could mean just as much walking, however the course was in great condition, the greens were lighting fast as, which was a challenge. Which resulted in more laughing than saying good putt well played.

Slow round - over five hours but held up by society of 40+ in front of us. Some really tough holes, especially on the back nine where an errant tee shot would be punished. Greens fast and sloping so when landing a wedge onto the green, it would slowly roll off! However, more of a challenge and more enjoyable than the 2010.

Another tough day on the course, but still enjoyable. A really stern test of golfing ability that favours accuracy over distance. Clearly designed by a player that was accurate with mid to long irons, but not the longest off the tee. The scenery was terrific, but the walk maybe not for the more senior demographic. Some VERY tough walks between holes, with severe uphill and downhill walks. Another tough test, but well worth a green fee.

A great corse having played the 2010 the day before this corse I found harder playing off 28 there is a lot of blind shots and lots of hills.i would recommend a buggy as ther is some long walks in between some holes also.even tho I found it hard I would definitely be going back to play again .it's well worth playing .

Enjoyable course quite hilly, book buggies pre round

Wow. What views. Superb. Buggy is a must. Very hilly. Very long walks from greens to tees. Some blind shots but wonderful to play. Again a bit soggy especially in the rough but considering the amount of rain the night before we played the course was in great condition. Starter was very informative. Again cannot fault this place. Absolutely superb.

We picked a wet day which meant the course was not busy. Waterlogged in places on the fairway, but very playable and greens were excellent, though surprisingly firm. Minor confusion on the tee regarding times. Clearly Celtic Manor have a communication problem between pro shop & starter.

I love this courser having played it before. I had forgotten how hilly it is and the need for a buggy. It was a little boggy after a long wet winter but just ok the weekend of 10th May. We had a clearly inexperienced 4 ball in front of us walking and they were just far in front enough to not really need to let us through so we felt a course marshal might have ben appropriate and we didn't see one.

Course was very boggy, lost balls in the fairway as they plugged, zero carry on the fairways. Buggies in front slowed down the round as have to stick to buggy tracks.

Course was unplayable Purchased this "golf resort & PGA course experience" as a gift for my husband & friends. Due to the recent bad weather the courses were unplayable ... but this was not communicated prior to the group making a 4hour journey from Yorkshire to S. Wales. So the group arrived to find no golf available to play. The golf can be re-booked however the accommodation cannot. Very disappointed that 6 people took two days off work to make this special trip only to find it a "wash-out" in more than one way. The most disappointing part was the total lack of communication from the resort to advise what were the options prior. The golf team knew the course was totally unplayable. Very unprofessional and very unfair of the organisation.

Absolute disgrace of a golf course. Only played 3 holes of a 2 day trip. Took 1 and half hours for 3 holes because the course is not fit to play. Complete bog, nothing cut ,so was like hitting into a ploughed field. Lost ball every shot as it was so wet the ball plugged in middle of what they claimed was a fairway and everyone on each hole searching for balls. Complete waste of money and time. They should be ashamed of themselves for taking people’s money. People getting free upgrades to 2010 course but being turned down as too wet to play.

Confusingly the drainage of this was far better than the 2010 we played the day before and apparently the 2010’s should be A1 as it’s relatively new? Greens were better, faster and a lot truer too

The course was very wet and boggy it should of been closed if I had lived closer I would just gone home but after a 5 hour drive was very disappointing

So disappointed! We spent more time looking for our balls which were plugged due to the really poor course conditions and lack of drainage. A lot of golf balls are still on or rather in the fairways. It really should have been closed in my opinion and others that we spoke with also concur. ☹️

It had clearly rained a lot and the course was very boggy, but it’s a lovely course overall. Definitely recommend a buggy, there are such long walks between some of the holes

The course was in appalling condition, with all fairways soaked and any ball driven ending up being plugged and non visible. Standing water in many areas making it exceptionally difficult to navigate a trolley around. Mud was over the golf shoes in places. In my opinion a total waste of time going out.

Very hilly, I recommend buggies. The round was slow due to conditions, rather than pace of play. Very wet at the time (March) and spent time looking for balls that plugged. Brilliant views, particularly back 9. High handicappers will find it tough. Plays long when wet and cold (Limited ball carry and no roll out on landing).

Sorry guys, the Celtic Manor courses are to be avoided in the winter. In one of the highest rainfall areas of the UK, the courses have been built on a clay base with no drainage ditches on the fairways despite being part of the Celtic Manor Resort which requires that the courses are open regardless of the weather. The Pro and managers all agreed that the courses shouldn't be open but are obliged by their partnership with the Celtic Manor Resort to be open 365 days a year. Will we get our money back, I would doubt it, we were offered another freebie winter round as compensation, but who will pay the travel costs to get there ?

Course is far too wet and should be shut for several months. Celtic Manor favouring profit over safety.

Just like playing a public course, needed wellington boots not golf shoes to play in. Another course that shouldn’t have been open. In places on the fairway your feet sunk 6 inches. Never coming back and definitely wouldn’t recommend it.

Tough course, made harder by the amount of rainfall in the days previous. Very sludgy in parts, but the greens were immaculate. Hard slog, due to weather but still enjoyable. Not much the course can do about British weather.

The course played ok and I definitely recommend taking a buggy round the Monty as it’s very hilly and there is some distance between greens & tees.

Both Montgomerie and Roman Road are very challenging but fair. The greens were in excellent condition as were the courses in general

Very nice course layout. Fairways were not that good. Very bobble muddy. Ball can never roll out. Needs a good cut. Semi rough was very rough. Same again needs a cut. Didnt understand it because roman road was brilliant.

Most interesting of the 3 courses .. more positional than about how far you can hit it.

Should be named the Walt Disney course not the Montgomerie. Only about two pins visible from any tee and a huge number of blind shots. If you are playing with someone who knows their way around then perhaps it is a test but if it's your first time it is a gruelling experience which if your purpose is an enjoyable round of golf it doesn't come up to scratch. The conditions were wet when we played which didn't enhance the experience but I suspect even the dry would not have been significantly better. If you are only playing two courses on your trip avoid this one.

Must have a buggy because of the long distances between some holes. Having to stick to the buggy paths adds to much time to the round. We have been made aware of past tragedies for which we have great sympathy but as the buggies can be limited as to where they can go we would not have thought it was neccessary to stick to path when fairways are hard

A good test of golf on varied terrain. A long walk not spoiled but enhanced by variety of holes to test your thinking as much as your golf ability. Probably the course of the three that I'd most like to play again

Fairways very dry and hard almost no grass Yes it has been very dry weather but you would have expected some kind of fairways irrigation system

Well, where do I start? It seems hot summer conditions confuse Welsh grounds keepers. The greens were slow, the fairways hard, bumpy and like concrete (good luck getting a club under the ball), the bunkers (other than one or two at the start of the round) were clay with no sand, and likely to damage your wrists, your clubs or both. There was very little decent signage, barber's poles or other assistance to help first time players here navigate the course. An interesting track spoiled by how it was presented. Venue seems more keen to take money off you (55 quid for a buggy!) and get as many out on the course at a time than to provide a great golfing experience.

We had a range of Golfers in our group of 24 varying from 5 to 28 handicap and without exception it was felt that the course was not suitable for a society. Greens too fast , Bunkers very poor & distance between some Tees and Greens long way. A number of us have played the Roman Road before which was fine.

Great fun golf course. As with all CM courses the buggy situation spoilt all rounds, buggies staying on path’s doesn’t work, you end up walking across fairways with a handful of clubs etc. makes the rounds very slow and players with medical needs still struggle because of the amount of walking you still have to do on hilly courses.

Same as the other two courses poor course maintenance just want your money and not investing it back into the courses - Celtic Manor may have been a golf venue once but now its very much a corporate venue - focus on keeping the Hotel busy with corporate events & any money generated goes into the hotel first and what's left goes to the courses - which from our experience is very little - I would strongly suggest to any golfer or golfing party before considering Celtic Manor is to look at other courses i.g. The Grove, Woburn, Frilforth Heath, The Berkshire etc... great courses in great condition but NOT CELTIC MANOR

Really interesting course, play the course very blind as you can’t see where your ball is landing because of the hills. A little dangerous with no bells or any indicator to know when it’s safe to drive. Very hilly if you have any issues waking I wouldn’t recommend even in a buggy.

Superb course. A little wet when we played and I would recommend a buggy or a least an electric cart. Very picturesque with some super holes.

Everything I said before applies to this.

Extremely saturated leading to no carry and many lost balls from plugging in the fairway. There were no ball cleaning facilities around the course which were very needed in the conditions. The requirement to keep buggies to the path, which I understand with the saturated ground, made it a less enjoyable experience

I was told I did not need to book a buggy, on arrival I was told none available.( £55.00) so had to walk and hire an electric trolley (£20.00). The course was water logged, some long walks between holes, very hilly 3 hours front 9 and 2 1/2 back.

Difficult in the rain but it should be indicated somewhere how hilly it is - battery trolley or buggy needed for some.

We were lucky to be first off which worked out perfectly, from previous reviews we was expecting it to be a bit of slog and although the course was boggy in places it’s played pretty well especially the greens. The 1st was probably the hardest first I’ve ever played and the 12th was the stand out hole not only was it fun to play but you also got some stunning views and a little peak at the twenty ten course. Would 100% recommend a buggy

Very long walk between holes so would definitely recommend a buggy. Very wet and muddy when we played and cart path only so we opted to walk. Long round but nice enough course.

Much better condition than yesterday even in the rain

We were 30 minutes delayed with our tee off and the round took 6 hours which is totally unacceptable. Surprised the course was open as the conditions were extremely wet and boggy. Real shame.

Again very very wet but the sun came out. About right for 12, 15, 16 and 18 handicappers. We took buggies (which were slightly overpriced) and would recommend them, although my party is relatively fit, some of the hill climbs are tough. Would definitely play this course again.

Do not carry, very up and down and walks between holes

The final course of our 2 day stay, and once again a great day the weather held fair again and the facilities were great, we had a truly great experience playing theses courses and can't wait to try them again.

What a course! Some unbelievable holes with scenic views. Lots of quirky holes & dog legs. As a plus 1 golfer this course was probably the most enjoyable of the 3

Again, a slow round but not as bad as Roman Road course.

Course was great, fairway’s obviously a bit brown and dry due to the recent hot weather but greens were fantastic condition, very quick too. Lady Marshall did have words with slow group in front to get a move on, they let us through on 10th.

Would recommend a buggy on this course. We always walk but it even became too hilly for us especially the back 9. Played on a very hot day ball running down slopes very pretty course Lovely views. This was the least enjoyable course we played.

This course is great, but it is very hilly and there is a lot of walking between greens and the next tee. It would be good to have a recommendation for buggies on this course

Same as the Roman Road course, lovely lay out and design, especially the 12th hole (par 5) as it is mostly downhill and if a tee shot is caught sweet and down the middle, it only needs a short to mid iron to get the ball on the green for an eagle chance, and the views from the 12th green are second-to-none as you can see most of the 2010 course so makes it even more special, and the 12th hole on the Montgomery Course is one of the best holes I have ever played.

Whilst we understand the reason for buggies staying on the cart path as a result of a tragic accident it makes this course in particular extremely hard work.There are long distances between some holes and the ball can be a long way fromthe path. This must be addressed before we are able to book this trip again.

Very long course with long walks between holes. Used a buggy but have to keep on path and always seemed to be miles away from buggy path. Never played a shot on level ground. Greens fast and course in very good condition. I personally did not enjoy the course but lower handicap players might enjoy it.

We were meant to play this course but YGT had cancelled our rounds according to celtic manor pro shop. Our original t times were 0930 on booking confirmation but we got told we couldn’t play until 1500 as no spaces available. A very helpful pro at the clubhouse managed to get us out between a members competition at 12 on the Romain course which we shouldn’t have been playing but was happy to get out at all. I shall never book another trip with YGT again weekend was a disaster to be honest !!!

After playing the 2010 first, the monty wasn’t as picturesque until you got on the back nine But the 12th hole is something else, a golfers dream!!! Some fantastic holes and scenery. Great experience

Some very nice holes on this course that present a real challenge. Quite a hilly course that presents additional challenges to the length of some holes.

Even with a Buggy, you have to stay on the buggy path, not on the fairways EVER! So the course was difficult to get from on side to the other the fairways were so wide. Lots of hillsides to deal with too. This course is Not for you if your walking is limited even with a Buggy.

Don’t even think about walking this …. Especially if it’s the last round of your tour ! Interesting course but a bit too up n down for me personally.. greens were excellent , v tricky

Our favourite course at CM with some spectacular views.. Some tricky holes requiring good course management. Take a buggy as very hilly. If you can only play one course, this is the one, IMO.

Again superb course immaculate the only thing on this course was you felt rushed as its very busy but loved it nevertheless

As we were new to this course, it would have been good to be informed before the round of the hilly walk. If we had known this, we would have hired buggies. A small point on what was a good day.

This course is tough walk and thats just from hole to hole, some holes have no signage to next tee, bar the cart paths some routes are just there from people walking through and not fit for electric trolleys. This course you benefit from a golf cart to get from hole to hole but being path only they end up slowing the speed of play. Yes it’s has a paid range but again you have no access for a trolly if your already set up.

Better greens than the twenty10. Hilly is an understatement, especially as there weee no electric trolleys or buggy’s left, so had to walk with a manual trolley…got the step count up, but am glad I’m fairly fit!

To be honest the course wasn’t as good as I expected, from this resort, first 4 holes were blind dog legs, fairways were far from good. Hard mud

Decided to push trolley rather than buggie. Disappointed that gps not picking up correctly and turned out that the front and back 9 wrong way round on app etc. poor signage for trolleys especially on one hole( can’t remember no) because what looked like a walk path was actually not. Had to walk back up a massive hill to start again. Condition of course excellent especially greens slopes etc. Some long distances from green to tees especially 9th to 10th but it is what it is. Buggie recommended but I don’t do buggies as I think it spoils the round.

Changing 10 to 1 did not work sorry

Tough course, lots of blind tee shots, good bunkering. I’d say easiest greens to putt on out of the three. The amen corner of 11, 12 & 13 are spectacular! Make sure your trolley battery is fully charged as mine ran out! Great course.

The Monty was enjoyable and in better condition.

Loved everything about it

We've played the Monty before and really liked it. Found it dryer than Roman Roads, usually - but not this time! Sadly, it was so wet that we had to throw in the towel after 4 holes. We'd lost 3 balls by then - all on the fairways! Plugged and disappeared. Greens, by contrast, were excellent. Really first class, especially considering the weather.p the previous few days. Many thanks to Celtic Manor for the inclement weather scheme. We'll be back.

Unplayable

A lot of wet fairways as the day before on the 2010. A fantastic golf course and great greens!

Our main complaint other than the condition of the courses was that the only facility that was open for breakfast was the "greenside grill" as the clubouse didn't open until 11. We had to stand around in the freezing cold to get our bacon baps. Very disappointing and shows very little consideration for the fee paying visitor. We wanted to wrap our visit up in the 2010 clubhouse and were directed to the spike bar but this - like the pro shop, was closed. No repeat visit planned - they are keeping the course open at any cost.

Greens & tees were uneven. The fairways were wet underfoot. No ball run. It often plugged & was occasionally lost. Difficult to get a stance on occasions. Risk of slipping over. Superior design over Roman Road course. The terrain dictates its an undulating course. Long distances between greens & tees over undulating ground. A £40 buggy is a must. They have designated paths. No fairway usage. Due to the soil type & conditions, playing it in the winter is not ideal. Due to uncleared trees on the course from the recent storms, buggies were not allowed on the back nine. I only played the Monty front nine & the other nine holes on the Roman Road course. Not ideal but I wasn’t prepared to walk it in light of the layout & conditions. Trousers were caked in mud. I would not dissuade anyone from playing the Monty course but the conditions would have to be right to make it enjoyable. Personally, I will not be returning to Celtic Manor as I was a little underwhelmed by the two courses & conditions. Links winter golf for me next time. The Princes package is hard to beat for me.

Considering the fact that it was in December and the course was a little wet it was a real delight to play

Again it was very very muddy and the greens were bobbly! If we came again it would have to be in the spring/summer when the course is dry.

Pace was slow, waited to play most shots. Weather was awful as well after 5 holes in so we gave up after 9 holes.

Our watches for distance etc didn't match to the course or the fairway markers didn't seem right. It wasn't until the next day when we said it to the starter on the Roman road course. He told us the changed the back nine and front nine around and the fairway markers are to the front of the green. Disappointed with the round.

Very long course. Long distances between holes. Had a buggy but still 5 hours. Had to stay on the buggy path so finding your ball, walking to it, having the right club was difficult and spoilt the game. No distance markers and no different coloured flags to indicate pin position. Not any guidance as to pin positions. Disappointing.

Would say the Montgomerie Course is much harder than the Roman Road Course. Narrow fairways, blind shots.. it is only 5700 yards but feels much longer playing up some of those hills. Would suggest a buggy for this course even if they are cart path only! Greens in great shape. Some of the tee boxes could do with work. Real test for the average golfer.

We were promised they’d be plenty of buggies at the venue by YGT but half of our group were forced to walk. Not an easy walk either! Only disappointment of the holiday really. Also they need to change the sausages and bacon on the breakfast buffet as they were both substandard. Dinner in The Rib Restaurant was very good though.

The last days golf on this testing course with some fantastic views and drop down greens to be had this is a great course to finish the trip off.

Great course, different to the 2010. Decided not to use our ordered buggies on the day. However they had ran out of electric trolleys, so had to use a pull trolley. A very long but great walk

The Montgomerie course is outstanding. It is a difficult test of golf but very fair and it was in superb condition. We couldn’t understand the reason for swapping the 1st for the 10th however.

Lots of features and blind shots. Great little course and would definitely play it again. Definitely get a buggy

Good course great views take a buggy

The front 9 is not great, can’t see any tee shots, the back 9 is definitely worth the money!

This coarse is very hilly so I would recommend getting a buggy we was unlucky because there was a corporate day so all the buggies was hired out also be careful walking down the 9th fairway as range balls come flying over your head .

Another great course at Celtic manor and what a facility CM is, top notch and all 12 of us will be back one day, thank you for a great 4 days of golf

The course layout was extremely disappointing. There are too many totally blind tee shots and quirky/crazy holes. When playing a course for the first time it does not help when you haven't a clue where you are going. It would have been better in the original layout i.e. the 10th (as now) being the 1st. This would allow you to ease into the round rather than starting with an extremely challenging tee shot on a crazy hole. We could not think why the change would have been made. In truth, we did not believe that the terrain was suited to having a golf course. That there was one was a bit of a miracle of engineering. Added to that the round was painfully slow. Indeed, the 4 ball behind us gave up after the 9th because of the pace of play. I would not play this course again.

Excellent course The only downside was that buggies had to stay on the paths which meant as much walking when playing the holes as using a trolley or carrying clubs. However there were quite a few holes where there was quite a distance from green to next tee where buggies were an advantage

This course is the worst of the three,the walks between greens and next tee boxes are too long,and the change of first tee is terrible

Raining hard first nine but ok second, can’t change the weather, they have changed the course around, preferred it the other way, need more signs by the now ninth as our first group went down the 10th on the Roman road, got through three holes until we got hold of them.

If you play this course do not use a push trolley! I have never played a course with so many steep hills! But outstanding golf course and great cardio workout

A course you would benefit from playing regularly. Quite a few blind shots. 1st tee shot a bit uninspiring but some nice holes. Again the rough was a bit unkempt. Quite hilly in places. Buggies good from green to next tee but of no use on the actual course.

Our group (3 tee times) were first ones off in the morning at 8am and in buggies managed to get round the course in around 4 hours, even with poor weather from the 10th hole onwards. Not as challenging as the 2010 course overall but very hilly and some long distances between holes so would definitley recommend using buggies. Some lovely views and challenging long and short holes made this a lovely course to play despite the poor weather.

Having a buggy is a waste of time as you have to stick to the paths and you end up going back and forth to your ball. Most courses allow buggies on in the summer. Very busy.

I regretted walking the course! Should have had a buggy!

Fun coarse

Course was difficult but a pleasure to (TRY AND) play. The only real downside was the strict interpretation of the rule for keeping to buggy paths with its' obvious effects on a very hot day. Surely with fairways so hard, some leeway, even just the 90 degree rule should be applied. This did actually spoil the round.

What a beautiful course. Good but fair challenge off the yellows. Greens really quick and some stunning views, would recommend a buggy as long distance between greens and tees.

The course was shorter than Roman but more difficult as most greens were raised and defended but bunkers. Same issue with buggies it’s a must to reserve them and have it in writing. Also buggies recommended for distance between next tees.

No buggies on fairways ruined it for me, not proper golf, to far between some tees so not good to walk.

A truly amazing course, the best I have ever played and very scenic. The third hole was the most beautiful I have ever played and the longest at 608 yards. Very hilly and would recommend a buggy around here.

Great course for average handicap players hard because very wet

Most scenic course I have ever played with breathtaking holes and views!

Due to the very wet conditions the course played very long, which made It very tiring. Although we had a buggy the paths for these always seemed to be the wrong side of the fairway from where most people played their shots. Greens were very good considering the weather.

The course was saturated and it made the game very muddy and also caused a slow round. But the course was wonderful and would love to play it again in a dryer month

We stopped at the ninth after being held up and taking just over 3 hours to the ninth - there did not seem to be any policing of the slow golfers - including us there were 5 groups playing/ waiting / waiting on the ninth at 3 pm so we gave up

Very wet greens flooded for last 5 holes

The course is very hilly and we did not use a buggy but should have done. The fairways were all long grass as the weather had affected cutting. It is a good course but the slower than average timing was mainly due to buggy players having to keep to the tarmac paths and hence back and forth to the buggy.

Once again the weather intervened and although we were offered vouchers to return at a more clement time we played, got wet and had a very jolly time. It is a long course and I would certainly recommend a buggy for the less doughty golfers. Staff were exemplary in their help and guidance.

Personally as a high handicap player this was a lot tougher than the Roman as tighter course with more hazards. Again course and greens immaculate. Were advised to use buggies as there is quite a hike between some holes. We walked as buggies on paths only and although tiring well worth the walk. Some stunning holes and scenery looking down on the 2010 course is fabulous.

Even though this course is probably third choice for most people, as 2010 and roman road are the more popular of the 3, they certainly dont neglect this course. Its awesome. The really good challenge for any golfer Playing the 3rd hole is spectacular amongst others) Only criticism about the course is as they are trying to squeeze that many people through, they join up 2 balls with each other to make a 4 ball. The issues i had with that, was different people have a different standard of golf (handicaps) me (8) and my friend (3), were not pros by any means but being put with 2 people us can barely hit the ball really frustrated us as it slowed are game massively and the round wasn't as enjoyable Would recomend going as a 3 ball to save yourself the bother of pairing up

Get your climbing boots on but what a fantastic course

Impossible without a buggy and really annoying you have to leave buggy on track you never have the right club and have to make several trips down difficult terrain

Made a lot harder when playing on 2 hours sleep with a stinking hangover. The 4 of us that played were all really surprised with this course. Not that we thought it would be bad but we didn’t think it would be as good as the Twenty Ten. We were wrong. Callum at YGT recommended this one for us and what a brilliant recommendation it was. Very happy with everything about the trip. We will definitely be booking with Callum again soon!

Another good golf course, a shame buggies were restricted to the paths considering the weather and how dry the course was. Abit of a pain having to go back and fore sometimes carrying a few different clubs to your ball. A very long walk between some of the greens and tees so I would advise a buggy on this course more so than the 2010. Still a great course and challenging!

Quite a few hills and some long walks between the green and the next hole. If you have walking difficulties a buggy is advisable but that has a drawback, no buggies allowed on the fairways . This can mean quite a walk across the fairway to get to your ball even if the course in good condition. When your paying £40 for a buggy and may have health issues, hence the buggy, I thought this was a bit much.

Cart Path only at all times. No need as course was very dry and 90 degree rule would have been helpful as my wife has difficulty walking

Course was in excellent condition with stunning views. I thought it was harder than the 2010 in places even though it is shorter. Several drives through gaps in trees or over thick rough/jungle. Greens had been sanded recently (has to happen) and had more slopes and undulations than the 2010 course. Organisation prior to round was excellent (got 2 free buggies because one hired trolley ran out of battery playing the 2010 course). Really good challenge and well worth a visit

By this time I had had enough disappointments so I didn't really care.

The Montgomery is not for the faint-hearted! It is challenging and long! It was in excellent condition and the greens were tricky! It is definitely a buggy course purely because of the gaps between tees. I cannot wait to tackle it once again - in a buggy!

Probably my favourite course as it resembled some of the courses I’m and used to play on. The highlight of the course has to be the Par 5 third hole which is beautiful from start to finish and apparently in Seve’s top 100 holes. The greens didn’t appear as tough or as quick as the other two courses, but you still have to carefully manage your way around the course. I can’t wait to get back and play it again.

My partner & I would describe ourselves as midrange handicappers, 18 & 20, & found the course long & challenging, although thoroughly enjoyable. The scenery is stunning & the variety of holes exceptional, although it is very hilly & I would suggest a buggy is an essential for all but the fittest. We had booked a two-ball but were paired up with another pair, nice enough lads, but one was having an absolute mare so this slowed us up to the point our rhythm was lost at times.

Our bags were taken from the 2010 up to the Montgomery but nobody told us where they where as that nearly missing our tee time

Really happy we chose to play the montgomerie, greens not great they have a serious issue with work infestation on a few of the holes but still enjoyable. Buggies are a must!!!

Inadequate signage & long walks between holes. Greens were disappointing with recent aeration & sand making the greens a lottery for putting. We were not told. Put with 2 delightful young men who were erratic, had no official h/c, & no knowledge of the new rules of golf. Play was extremely slow.

An ok course, green weren't great, sandy, bobbly etc. you need to play it before the 2010 as comparing the 2 doesn't do this course justice - the back tees of the 1st need bringing back.

Need your walking boots with this course, a tough hilly course, very challenging, but fair. Advice is to either play last on your trip, or hire a buggy. Very scenic due to location, and some great holes.

Felt like as many people as possible was crammed on to this course. Every shot we had to wait for the 4 ball in front. Course wasn't great on the eye, quite average.

May want a buggy as some steep hills, but great course 👍

Very slow play left after nine holes.

Extremely hilly with fast greens lots of bunkers and difficult pin positions could be set up easer for a resort definitely need a buggy at £38 !

With the weather been very wet the weekend before we got there the course was playing very long with no run the only problem we had was the bunkers had not been racked.buggy good idea on this course.
