Despite being born in Scotland and having Scottish ancestry, Colin was brought up in Yorkshire, where his father, James Montgomerie, held the position of Managing Director at Fox's Biscuits.
He dedicated several years to the Ilkley Golf Club, under the guidance, Bill Ferguson and while residing in Leeds, developed a strong allegiance to Leeds United.
Montgomerie was among the pioneering British golfers to pursue higher education in the United States, enrolling at Houston Baptist University. During his tenure, he showcased his golfing prowess by representing the university's golf team and emerging as its foremost player. Additionally, he clinched three significant Scottish amateur tournaments, namely the 1983 Scottish Youths Championship, the 1985 Scottish Amateur Stroke Play Championship, and the 1987 Scottish Amateur Championship.
Colin turned professional in 1987 and was named Rookie of the Year in Europe in 1988. He secured his first professional win at the Portuguese Open, where he won by an impressive 11-shot lead. He continued to climb up the money list, and in 1993, he became Europe's number one player, a position he held for an unprecedented run of seven years.
Affectionately known to millions around the world as "Monty", he is one of Britain's most revered sportsmen, having taken center stage in numerous tournament victories and eight titanic Ryder Cup Matches as a player. In October 2010, he led the victorious 2010 European Ryder Cup Team at Celtic Manor, cementing his status as a highly respected figure in the sport.
