Ranked just outside Scotland's Top 50, Nairn Dunbar is a widely admired links and well worth building into any Scottish Highlands Golf Tour. Set beside the Moray Firth, it delivers proper seaside golf: firm turf, a constant breeze and the sort of shotmaking you simply don't get on parkland back home.
It's also brilliantly placed for a multi-course trip. Nairn Golf Club is close by, Castle Stuart is an easy hop along the road and Royal Dornoch sits a little over an hour to the north. If you want to keep the costs sensible without skimping on quality, there are some cracking supporting options nearby too, including Boat of Garten, Fortrose & Rosemarkie and Golspie Golf Club.
On the course, expect the wind to be a proper factor, particularly on the more exposed holes. Fairways tend to run fast, greens are usually true and the bunkers are placed to catch the half-committed swing. Play it with your brain switched on, keep it under the breeze and you'll have a great day. Get loose with the driver and Nairn Dunbar will happily take a shot or two off you.
Who is this for?
Golfers putting together a Highlands run who want a top-rated links without paying the very top-end green fees. Spot on for groups, societies and couples hopping between Nairn, Castle Stuart and Dornoch.
Who is it best for?
Mid to low handicappers who enjoy shaping shots and managing the wind. If you like firm turf and proper links decisions off the tee, you'll love it. High handicappers can still enjoy it, but bring a few spare balls if the breeze gets up.

The par-72 championship course at Nairn Dunabr is an established tournament venue, having hosted the Northern Open Professional Championship, the Scottish Ladies Amateur Strokeplay and the Scottish Boys Strokeplay in years gone past.
The course may have been founded in 1899, but the facilities are entirely modern, with former Royal & Ancient chief Sir Michael Bonallack OBE having officially opened the new clubhouse in May 1998.
In recent years, the club has also made massive efforts to improve the course and heighten the "links experience" so many golfers head to Scotland to enjoy. A large number of trees and significant areas of gorse have been removed to allow natural grasses to flourish, and a concerted effort has also been made to ensure the playing surfaces are fast and firm, allowing golfers to be creative and play all the shots required to master links golf.

Lovely course with a real club feel about it. A nice additional option to some of the fabulous courses in the area. Great finishing hole

More of a parkland course than a links course but every aspect from start to finish was very good.

A good , enjoyable experience. Unfortunately the greens had been treated the day before and were a bit sandy but that did not detract from a really good day.
