Craigielaw Golf Course

Located in the picturesque village of Aberlady, and bordering the traditional links at Kilspindie, Craigielaw is not a classic seaside course. Massive, undulating putting surfaces give the course an American resort edge, but the overriding influence is the firm, sandy turf underfoot.

Being a modern build, Craigielaw is longer and more open than many older links, but the key to scoring still lies with the short game. The tough greens and the endless cavernous bunkers which surround them make this course a real gem.

Despite its youth, Craigielaw has already been awarded the 2006 Scottish Amateur Strokeplay Championship, and the qualifying for the 2007 Senior Open Championship, to be staged at nearby Muirfield. The excellent practice facilities at Craigielaw make it a haven for some of Scotland's best golfers.

How to get to Craigielaw Golf Club

Craigielaw Golf Club is situated to the west of Aberlady off the A198, just 3 miles from Longniddry train station.

The twin rooms in the lodge were very good. Breakfasts were decent enough. The bar lacked any sort of atmosphere and bizarre that there is no TV anywhere (we stayed the weekend of the US Open and had to leave the golf club to watch it!). Fortunately, The Leddie, 10 mins walk away, was excellent.

Had a great stay, a good meal on the first night, excellent breakfasts, good practice facilities (available even though we didn’t play the course) and quite a lot of Bellhaven and Merlot! Would love to stay here again.

Generously sized room at the back of the Lodge so without view across the course to the coast. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast choice is quite limited but the cooked breakfast buffet was good quality although they struggled to restock items in time. The restaurant was functional and food was good but lacking in healthier options. Despite view the restaurant lacked atmosphere. The best view is from the Members lounge which is only open to hotel guests in the evening.

We were a group of 24 golfers and this is the perfect venue for discovering the East Lothian area. The facilities (par 3 and driving range) are fantastic and it certainly is fantastic value for money. Staff were also great and we would certainly return especially to enjoy the view from the bar area which is spectacular. 5 stars given the value for money rather than actual level of the facilities

As discussed with John we were locked out of the facility between 2am and 3am on Sunday morning. We luckily found an open door into the kitchen and entered that way otherwise we were facing a night outside. Not really good enough. We ended up missing breakfast as a result and despite logging our experience with the lodge reception no one approached us while we spent 2 hours in the restaurant eating and paying for breakfast. At the very least I would have expected someone to come and speak to us and perhaps offer us the breakfast on the house. Not really good enough and would put me off going back.

We had a great stay at Craigielaw, everything was perfect except for the pillows which were like bricks! The food was amazing and all the staff so friendly. Weather was brilliant and the golf courses so good. Hope to come back again soon!!

Our room had a tiny single bed and a huge double bed. Totally unsuitable for two unrelated golfers. The food was excellent but the service was not, especially the bar service. It will probably be better when we can go to the bar again. Pro Shop staff were efficient, friendly and helpful. Although we enjoyed the trip a great deal we would probably consider staying somewhere else next time.

Very enjoyable stay, the hotel was spotlessly clean and the rooms very comfortable. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The food was excellent . Our only complaint was that due to the beautiful weather, the tables for dinner were right beside the window and the sun was still very hot and in our eyes which was a bit annoying. That could easily be rectified with some window blinds. The staff brought a screen on the second night. However we thoroughly enjoed

Given it’s a relatively new course, Craigielaw really surprised our group with its quality. Despite a deluge in the morning, it played unbelievably well in the afternoon and the greens stood up incredibly to the weather. Couldn’t fault the condition of the course at all. Very welcoming in the Pro shop. Clearly, given its position, you don’t get right next to the sea, but the course is definitely a links and you get the links turf you’re hoping for.

A beautiful spot in East Lothian. A good test for all golfers ability - perfect for a large group with mixed handicaps. Only criticism was the pin locations which were often on sloping areas of the greens, leading to impossible putts when the wind was up! Frustrating and led to being slow on the greens. Otherwise we were welcomed well by the pro shop team and house staff and made to feel very welcome. Clubhouse lunch was suitable for a large group also!

We had two rounds in late August as a two ball. The first was following members 4 balls so a bit slow but reasonable 4 ball pace. As links style course it is very exposed and the wind is a big factor. We had rain showers in the first round and dry and sunny in the second which was quicker and we were round in three and a half hours. The rough is thick if you stray too far off line making finding the ball difficult let alone playing it. The green fees are a lot more reasonable than the majority of courses in the area. The views across the Firth of Forth are lovely.

We could not believe that the course was only 20 years old. Well worth the visit, and stopping at the lodge had to walk 20yards to the 1st tee.

Generally the course was in good condition. The greens however, were slow and bumpy unfortunately. Difficult course if accuracy off the tee isn’t a strong part of your game.

Excellent

As long as you stay on the fairways, the course is very manageable, greens though are extremely tough due to the undulation, and the bunkers, well, best just stay out of them!

Very Good

Had expected a more welcoming attitude, as we were not familiar with the course. No information regarding the course and no course guide was provided. Their is definately room for improvement. As we do not know the green fee rate it had to give a rating for value for money.

Great venue with a stunning location and views. Course was still showing signs of early growth from winter. Some areas around greens were lacking growth. We opted as a group to play preferred lies. However, the group decision was a fantastic weekend at Craigie Law and Kilspindie.

First 9 holes were great. Last 9 unfortunately played in heavy driving rain. Rain did not collect either on the fairways or greens which was a good indication of the quality of the drainage. Course was in great condition despite the near drought conditions throughout the year.

Had a great day at the Craigielaw Golf Club which is a classic Scottish Links course right on the sea with amazing views. This course is very challenging and playing with helpful locals made navigating the difficult course a bit easier. Even with a 45 minute weather stoppage (heavy rain) Craigielaw produced my best round of a 3 round 8 day stay in Edinburgh.

Craigielaw is a good test as the bunkers and greens have been designed for championship golf. There are some very good holes (the first as an example) that make you think and if you are not in the right spot you are punished. We enjoyed the course and would definitely return especially as the hospitality was first rate (like most courses in this area).
