The 'Costa del Golf' has been the benchmark for European golf holidays for decades, with some of Europe's oldest and greatest courses lining this sun-drenched stretch of southern Spain. For a modern resort to make any noise here takes something properly special, which is exactly what happened when Finca Cortesin opened in 2007.
Set between Sotogrande and Marbella, on the road up towards Casares, this is one of those venues that feels like it was built for big weeks. The hotel delivers five-star calm from the moment you arrive, but the course is the headline act, regularly ranked among Europe's best modern layouts and a proven tournament host. It has staged the European Tour's Volvo World Matchplay three times, then stepped onto an even bigger stage by hosting the 18th Solheim Cup in 2023.
If you like your golf with a championship feel, expect immaculate conditioning, plenty of visual drama and a layout that asks for proper shot-shaping rather than simply bashing driver. It's the sort of place where a great round feels earned, and where the off-course comfort makes it easy to turn a golf break into a full-blown luxury escape.
Who is this for?
Golfers after a genuinely high-end Costa del Sol break where the golf feels like a tournament week and the hotel, spa and dining are the sort you'd happily travel for even without clubs.
Who is it best for?
Confident golfers who enjoy a proper test, plus couples and small groups who want five-star downtime, slick service and a venue with real pedigree.

Overlooking the spectacular Costa del Sol shoreline of Southern Spain, Finca Cortesin is a special place to play golf. It is here that the remarkable contrast of colours and tones set the scene, and where the designer, along with renowned landscape architect Herald Huggan, has created a true masterpiece.
From the championship tees, Finca Cortesin can be extended beyond 7,500 yards, making it a formidable proposition, even for the world’s finest players who enjoyed it as the venue of The Volvo World Matchplay Championship, past winners include Ross Fisher, Ian Poulter and Nicolas Colsaerts.
Impeccably manicured Bermuda grass fairways are punctuated with bunkers filled with gleaming white sand, creating a stunning visual contrast. While the golf course is monumentally challenging from the back tees, Robinson was at pains to manufacture a layout that could be enjoyed not only by the best golf has to offer but by golf holiday makers of every ability. As such there are tees to suit players of all shapes and sizes.
Signature hole: par 4, 4th hole
The par 4, 4th measures in at a tantalising 330 yards meaning that for the longer hitters the green is reachable in 1 and potentially setting up a chance of eagle. However, this classic risk and reward hole is not without danger as the green is very well protected by a large water hazard meaning if your tee shot is not perfect then you will almost certainly be in the drink. The sensible play for this hole would be to hit a long iron off the tee down the right hand side of the fairway leaving you with a short iron into the green taking the water on the left hand side completely out of play.
In association with the local area’s golfing delights such as Valderrama, Sotogrande and La Reserva, Finca Cortesin can be included in a golf tour of the very highest order that will rival anything in Europe or indeed the rest of the world.

The hotel at Finca Cortesin comprises 67 luxurious suites, each one a perfect base for any golfer visiting the Costa del Sol. The suites are exceptionally spacious, furnished with elegant pieces that give every room a refined, understated style. This is a landmark hotel that has redefined what a southern Spanish golf resort can be.
Every suite features its own private garden or balcony, ideal for soaking up the Andalusian sun and taking in the views across the estate. The hotel sits just a short walk from the first tee, so your next round on this championship layout is never more than a few minutes away. That proximity is a real bonus when you're playing multiple rounds, you can nip back to your room between loops, grab lunch at the hotel, or simply enjoy the fact that you're not spending half your day in transit.
Finca Cortesin isn't just for travelling golfers. The spa is genuinely peaceful, with dedicated areas for face and body treatments. Guests can choose from a varied treatment menu, from facials to full body therapies, all designed to revitalise skin and refresh mind and body. The spa also offers a variety of massage therapies, perfect for loosening up before your next round or unwinding after 18 holes on a warm afternoon. There are three separate treatment zones, which means the space never feels crowded, even when the hotel is busy.
The resort is home to two exceptional restaurants. El Jardín de Lutz serves traditional Spanish cuisine in a relaxed yet elegant setting, while REI showcases the work of renowned head chef Luis Olarra, who presents his own interpretation of Asian cuisine rooted in Japanese tradition and enriched with flavours from across the gastronomic world.
El Jardín de Lutz offers a more laid-back atmosphere for guests who prefer classic Spanish dishes. Inside, the restaurant features tall ceilings, clay-tiled floors, antiques and hand-painted Portuguese tiles. Outside, a spectacular terrace overlooks the Mediterranean and the resort's picturesque gardens, filled with ancient olive trees that add real character to the setting. It's the sort of place where you can linger over dinner without feeling rushed, and the menu leans heavily on local produce and traditional Andalusian recipes done well.
REI by Finca Cortesin is the hotel's signature restaurant, where guests can watch Luis Olarra at work in the open kitchen as he prepares dishes using top-quality seafood, produce grown organically in the resort's own vegetable garden and Spanish culinary classics reimagined with precision and flair. The tasting menu is the way to go if you want the full experience, and the wine list is strong on Spanish labels with a few international options for variety.
