Formby Golf Club

Formby Golf Club sits on the Lancashire coast between Liverpool and Southport and it's a cracking test if you like your golf proper and sandy underfoot. It's often described as a links, but it's not the wide-open seaside slog you might expect. Instead, you get a distinctive mix of links and woodland, with fairways running through pine-covered dunes that take the sting out of the wind in places.

The opening holes feel sheltered and tactical, then the back nine steps out into more exposed ground where the breeze has more say. When it's up, you'll need to pick smart lines and commit. Miss them and you're dealing with deep revetted bunkers and rough that's more than happy to swallow a slightly lazy swing.

The greens are quick and subtly contoured rather than wildly dramatic, so putting is more about pace and nerve than reading huge breaks. It's the sort of course that rewards accuracy and a bit of patience, especially if you're trying to plot your way round rather than overpower it.

Visitors are made welcome and the clubhouse has that traditional, member-led feel, relaxed enough for societies but still special for a "we've played a proper venue today" round. It feels a touch less formal than some nearby big names, which I think suits a lot of golf trips.

If you're building a Southport-area golf tour, Formby is an easy one to slot in alongside Royal Birkdale, Hillside and Southport & Ainsdale.

Who is this for?
Golfers planning a North West links run who want a championship-calibre course that's close to Liverpool and within easy reach of the Southport heavy-hitters.

Who is it best for?
Mid to low handicappers and confident ball-strikers who enjoy strategic bunkering and don't mind the wind turning a good score into a grind.

Formby Golf Club

Recent developments have seen the maximum length extended to over 7,000 yards, and with the constant threat of the indigenous heather, there is no doubting Formby's formidable challenge. The original 1884 design has seen alterations from revered names like Willie Park, James Braid, Hawtree, Steel, Colt and Pennick, some of the most prominent individuals in the history of British golf architecture, and with this pedigree, it is easy to understand why Formby is held in such high regard.

When the wind blows hard, the firm and fast greens are difficult to find, and the lengthy par-3s are some of the most challenging in the local area. The superb history of the club itself, and the exceptionally mature golf course make it one of the premier stops on the Southport tour.

Visitors to Formby will be following in some famous footsteps; among the list of past champions is Jose Maria Olazabal, who defeated his fellow Ryder Cup hero Colin Montgomerie in the final of the 1984 Amateur Championship.

Formby Golf Club is ranked as one of the best courses in England

Very similar to the previous courses. Lots of bunkers and if you kept out of them, a score is there for you. Greens are too tricky and some beautiful holes in the trees. Very hot when we played.

Simply the best golf course I’ve ever played. It would be fantastic to be a member, this course is easily in the top 100 courses it’s awesome. Speed of greens, the set up of the course is at another level. Will be arranging another visit to this gem, it’s better than I expected and I went with high expectations.
