Peterhead Golf Club sits on the Aberdeenshire coast in the historic fishing town of Peterhead, roughly 30 miles north of Aberdeen. This is proper links golf in a part of Scotland that can feel a lot quieter than the headline stops, so it's a great shout if you want authentic coastal golf without the same crowds you'll find at St Andrews or Royal Dornoch.
Founded in 1841, Peterhead is one of the oldest clubs in the North East and it still feels like a proper local links. The course was laid out by Willie Park Jr, the two-time Open Champion and architect behind layouts like the Old Course at Sunningdale, Gullane and Bruntsfield Links. He makes the most of the dunes and the coastal ground, with holes that change direction enough to keep you guessing when the wind gets up.
The layout runs out along the shoreline before looping back inland, giving you a mix of exposed seaside holes where the wind dictates club selection and slightly more sheltered stretches where you can attack the pin. Fairways are firm and fast-running in summer, and the bunkering, while not excessive, sits exactly where you don't want to be. If you're a links purist, this is the sort of place that rewards a bumped-up approach and a bit of patience, especially when the North Sea breeze starts doing its thing.
Fancy pairing it with the area's other heavy hitters? You can easily include Peterhead on an Aberdeen and North East Scotland golf break with Royal Aberdeen and Cruden Bay.

The New Course at Peterhead Golf Club was originally an 18 hole layout built in 1923. Due to neglect during World War II, the course was reduced to 9 holes.
The layout is similar to the Old Course at the Club, but with a more manageable length, making the course ideal for beginners and juniors. The sand dunes and wild grasses that are interspersed throughout the course enhance the classic links design.
