Caerwylan Hotel

9.8
Excellent See all 9 reviews

Caerwylan Hotel sits right on the front in Criccieth, looking out across Tremadog Bay with Criccieth Castle up the road. From the outside it's a proper Victorian landmark, but inside it's more modern and relaxed than you might expect, which is exactly what you want after 18 holes in a Welsh breeze.

Location is the big win here. You're a short stroll from the village centre for a post-round pint and something to eat, while the coastline is on your doorstep for an easy leg-stretcher the next morning. Head inland and you're quickly into Snowdonia territory, so if you've got non-golfers in the group, there's plenty to keep them busy beyond the beach.

If you're building a multi-course itinerary, Criccieth works as a handy base for exploring the region's best golf, from classic links along the coast to tougher tests with mountain backdrops. Take a look at our picks for North West Wales and you'll see why golfers keep coming back.

Who is this for?

Who is it best for?

Accommodation at Caerwylan Hotel

Caerwylan Hotel is best thought of as a comfortable coastal base rather than a full resort. That suits a lot of golf breaks down here, especially if your plan is to play, explore and spend evenings in Criccieth rather than stay on-site all day.

Rooms vary, with many set up to make the most of the sea views across Tremadog Bay. If views are part of the trip, it's worth requesting one when you book. After a day on the links, the hotel has a relaxed feel, ideal for couples and small groups who want somewhere easy and unfussy to come back to.

Practicalities matter on a golf trip, so it's worth checking the details when you enquire, including parking, dining options and whether there's space for storing clubs. The upside is you're also within walking distance of the village, so you've got choice for food and a casual drink without needing taxis.

For course access, Criccieth puts you within easy reach of the standout layouts around Harlech and the Llŷn Peninsula, with Snowdonia close enough to mix in a non-golf day. In summer, the beaches are a genuine alternative to the 19th hole, which is handy if you're travelling with non-playing partners or a mixed group.

The Victorian building has been thoughtfully updated to offer contemporary comfort while retaining its coastal character. The emphasis is on providing a quality stay in a superb location, with those ever-present bay views creating a relaxing atmosphere. For golfers who prioritise course access, scenery and a welcoming place to stay, Caerwylan Hotel delivers what matters without unnecessary extras.

The staff were expecting the 6 of us and checking in was straightforward. The bar had excellent views of the sea. We ate in the restaurant on Saturday night and the food was excellent and service exemplary. We had a 9.30 tee time at Royal St David’s and the staff served us earlier than the official 8am start for Breakfast. It was a very comfortable stay and extremely welcoming.

This was an excellent hotel. The location on the esplanade was excellent. The rooms were comfortable and, as with the rest of the hotel, elegantly decorated. The restaurant was first class and the lounge areas very comfortable. And most importantly of all, the staff were lovely.
