Twenty-five minutes from Marrakech's medinas and souks, PalmGolf Marrakech Ourika is a proper championship test at over 7,300 yards from the tips, par 72, with the Atlas Mountains sitting there in the background throughout the round. It's set where the foothills meet the plain, so you get that classic Morocco contrast of palms, scrub and bright green fairways.

The routing makes the most of the natural movement in the land, which means plenty of uneven lies and greens with real shape to them. If you're coming on a winter-sun trip, you'll love how quick and true the putting surfaces tend to run, but you do need to stay switched on with pace control. When the afternoon breeze comes down off the mountains, it can firm things up and make distance control into the greens a proper challenge.

In terms of standards, you're in safe hands. The same management group looks after The Els Club Dubai, La Reserva in Sotogrande and Costa Navarino in Greece, so conditioning and service are taken seriously. The practice set-up is strong too, with a full range plus short game and putting areas that give you a fair idea of what you'll face out on the course.

Visitors will love the mountain-backdrop golf and this one delivers in winter when the Atlas is dusted with snow. The course is walkable in the cooler months if you fancy it, although many take a buggy for the heat and the yardage.

Who is this for?
Golfers staying in Marrakech who want a quality round without trekking to the coast and groups mixing golf with food, culture and nightlife in the city.

Who is it best for?
Confident ball-strikers and mid-to-low handicappers who enjoy quick greens, a bit of wind and a course that rewards good positioning over simply swinging harder.

PalmGolf Marrakech Ourika

Since opening in 2015, PalmGolf Marrakech Ourika has quickly become a recognised layout in Morocco achieving a ranking of 8th by Top 100 Golf Courses for Morocco, quite a feat considering the many fantastic courses that it has to offer.

Designed by the Canadian pairing of Neil Haworth and Stephane Talbot, PalmGolf Marrakech Ourika is a course that has utilised the natural flora to create a fantastic golfing experience. Golfers can enjoy fairways lined by Olive, Palm and Cypress trees as well as numerous water hazards ensuring that those keeping it on the straight and narrow are the ones sure to play to their handicap.

Whilst the course can be extended to over 7,300 yards, most golfers won’t opt for the Black Tees but enjoy a more manageable test off the Yellow Tees at 6,542 yards. Many will look to the par-3 17th hole as one of the best on the course with it’s island green surrounded by contrasting sand but it will be holes like the par-5 7th, par-4 9th and par-5 18th that will shape your score with approaches and greens guarded closed by water with any shot straying offline sure to be punished.

As one of the best golf in the sun destinations, Marrakech is quickly becoming a must visit golfing destination with many heading here to take advantage of the superb winter sun on offer. Whilst PalmGolf Marrakech Ourika is one of the newer courses on offer in this region it is sure to be a popular choice with anyone seeking a playable layout that will challenge and reward during the course of your round.

Course a bit tired. Greens were ok but fairways and waste area needed more attention. Not many playing the course and the reasons were obvious. Buggy Boss was efficient. Pro shop was empty really, and the bar area was small. Beer was ok on the terrace. Would give it a miss next time

Fantastic course with rapid greens. Again stunning views all round. Only thing that lets this course down slightly is the infrastructure around it and some of the organisation but the course itself is well worth playing.

fairways and greens were in good condition but bunkers were either graded dirt or light, small gravel - not sand traps. nice setting with good views of the Atlas mountains. would play again but pricey for the quality.

The experience was spoiled by a 5 and a half hour round waiting on every shot. No sign of any starters or course marshals.

Arrived to find no trollies or buggies. All out on the course despite our 10.30 tee time! We were told by staff that they would try to provide something before we teed off! Eventually provided buggies with 5 minutes to go! The golf club is clearly in financial distress. Lots of broken trollies visible. Despite this, the course remains in good condition. Staff disinterested.
