Son Gual opened in October 2007 and, in many golfers' eyes, it's been the standout modern test on Mallorca ever since. Set just west of Palma, it's a handy one to fit into a long weekend, close enough to the airport and city that you can be on the first tee soon after you arrive (tee times permitting), but with enough countryside around you to feel like you've properly escaped.
This is a Thomas Himmel design that leans into strategy and proper shot-making rather than simply asking you to hit it as far as you can. The routing makes smart use of the property's natural movement, with mature woodland framing several holes and water coming into play often enough to keep you honest. You'll play through groves of olive and carob trees, negotiate a handful of substantial water hazards, and face approach shots that reward precision over power.
Approach play is the real separator here. Greens are quick and contoured, so you'll score best by placing the ball in the right part of the fairway and leaving yourself the correct angle in. Conditioning is a big part of Son Gual's reputation and, when it's on song, it's a joy to play, firm fairways, true putting surfaces and a finish that looks fantastic from the clubhouse terrace.
The practice facilities match the quality of the course itself, with a large driving range, short game area and putting green that allow for a proper warm-up. Speaking of which, the clubhouse has a properly upmarket feel, plus a restaurant that's a strong shout for a post-round bite with views over the closing hole and surrounding countryside.
Who is this for?
Golfers based around Palma and the south coast who want a top-quality round without adding loads of travel time.
Who is it best for?
Mid to low handicappers who enjoy thinking their way round a course and value great greens. If you're building a Mallorca golf break, Son Gual is the one I'd prioritise for your 'serious golf' day.

Lovely course but we had lots of rain - would like to play again on a sunny day to judge. Not as scenic as son Muntaner and clubhouse not as good. V nice staff though.
