About Royal Liverpool

As one of the golfing gems located on England's Golf Coast, Royal Liverpool Golf Club, or Hoylake to many, is about as close an experience to a traditional links golf course that you'll find anywhere. With fast-running fairways, undulations and obscured tee-shots as well as plenty of wind, Royal Liverpool provides a stern championship test that enjoys a rich pedigree of golfers who have triumphed in both Amateur and Professional events here.

Dating back to 1869, Royal Liverpool has enjoyed over 150 years of golfing history. With 1885 seeing the host of an Open Amateur "Grand Tournament" which went onto becoming the inaugural Amateur Championship, Hoylake has a golfing pedigree that is etched in the very capstone of the world of golf. Despite having undertaken some re-designs along the way, the course remains largely the same with the noticeable difference between a round being played outside of an Open Championship being that the 1st hole is the 17th, 2nd being the 18th in normal play with the formidable 1st hole in normal play becoming the 3rd hole.

Past Opens at Royal Liverpool

The Open Championship has been hosted by Royal Liverpool Golf Club on no less than 12 occasions. The players who have been crowned The Champion Golfers of The Year at Hoylake are amongst the very best to have played the game. Famed amateur Harold Hilton who became a two-time winner of The Open at Royal Liverpool, a win which was all the more sweet with it being his home club, took the 1st Open to be played here in 1897. This was followed by other notable victories by Arnaud Massy in 1907, the first non-Briton to win The Open, Walter Hagen in 1924 and perhaps the most memorable, Bobby Jones in 1930 which was the 2nd leg of what would become The Grand Slam.

In more recent times, victories for Australia's Peter Thomson in 1956 was the 3rd of an incredible 5 Open Championship victories, followed by the superbly talented Roberto De Vicenzo from Argentina who claimed the title in 1967, his only Major victory after a scorecard error at The 1968 Masters which denied him.

The Open returned to Royal Liverpool after nearly 40 years in 2006 with Tiger Woods claiming his 3rd Open Championship with an incredible -18 four-round total. The victory was one of course management with Woods famously taking on the fast-running fairways of Hoylake by employing long irons off the tee, in fact only using his driver once - missing the fairway funnily enough, taking him 2-shot victory over fellow American Chris di Marco. Tiger's victory was an emotional scene on the final green with Woods embracing caddie Steve Williams as the realisation of victory in a Major for the 1st time without his father Earl there to experience it having passed away in May before the tournament.

The 2014 Open Championship visited Royal Liverpool once more which saw another of the game's greats rise to the very top. Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy claimed a 2-shot victory over Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia. His opening 36 holes of back-to-back 66's set the tone for a superb victory in what was McIlroy's maiden Open Championship.

2022 sees The Open Championship return to Royal Liverpool where we'll no doubt see an exhibition of links golf and high-crowds descend upon this superb golfing masterpiece.
